The decarbonization of the built environment is a pressing priority, with jurisdictions in the U.S. and Canada aiming to enhance energy efficiency and transition existing buildings away from fossil fuels. All existing buildings need energy upgrades, involving more efficient building operations, a shift to electric or district heating systems powered by renewable energy, and the utilization of carbon-free renewable energy. Read this article from Buildings where Rohan Kelkar EVP, for Global Power Products Schneider Electric, shares his thoughts on making buildings more energy efficient: https://lnkd.in/gHM3q3Hx #partnershipsofthefuture #decarbonization #buildings#retrofitting

Shallow Energy Retrofits – Where to start on decarbonizing our existing buildings. Join us for our next luncheon presented by Heather Elliot, P.Eng., LEED Green Associate and Sam Lane at the Winston Golf Club (2502 6 Street Northeast, Calgary) on May 22nd @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm! Deep Energy Retrofits have caught on as a hot-topic for building owners looking to decarbonize their assets, but entry costs are perceived as high and many are struggling to take the first step. With decarbonization, the industry must take a tiered approach in order to establish where the most impact can be made. Heather and Sam will outline the process to initiate the process of reducing emissions and energy in existing buildings. Using their experience in retrofits from building envelope and sustainability perspectives, they will describe how to create a pathway to decarbonization that is intimately linked with capital planning, attention focused on the biggest offenders for emission, and upcoming regulatory policy. Why are smart green buildings relevant? Nearly one-third of the U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to America´s 130 million homes and commercial buildings, including energy used for construction, heating, cooling, installed appliances, and lighting homes and businesses. The U.S. Department of Energy has launched the Energy Earthshots to address the housing deficit, high energy burdens, and energy-inefficient homes. Let’s accelerate the green transition by collaborating. Sweden contributes with strength in industrialized building methods, new materials, and a focus on energy efficiency, which help to reduce operational and embodied carbon in buildings. Here’s an interesting piece from the International Energy Agency (IEA) - More efficient and flexible buildings are key to clean energy transitions. Buildings today account for about 30% of final energy consumption globally. We spend a lot of time in buildings, new or old, for home, work or play. To optimise comfort and safety, buildings require systems for thermal heating, cooling, ventilation, water supply, wastewater handling and fire protection – all of which demand high consumption of water and energy, thus impacting our environment and climate change. At Xylem, our systems are designed to meet these requirements in the most efficient way, whilst reducing energy demands and carbon emissions, helping in our journey towards net zero. https://lnkd.in/eCTU6gHA

Laying the bricks towards a decarbonised building sector On March 12, the European Parliament adopted a revised version of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption in EU's building sector. With comprehensive regulations and innovative solutions from public-private partnerships, energy efficiency is an embedded part of the Danish mindset. Danish companies provide innovative solutions and technologies in everything from insulation, windows, data control systems to architecture that make sustainable energy renovation projects possible. The reduction roadmap is a great example of the ambitious goals driving the Danish building sector, where private actors across the sector have partnered up to push the green agenda and heighten the political demands in the national building code for 2025.

The 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) by the International Code Council offers increased energy savings compared to the 2021 edition. Key changes include more flexibility in residential provisions like ceiling and wall insulation requirements, updated compliance paths, and provisions for existing buildings. The code also includes appendices for electrification and achieving zero net energy in buildings. National Association of Home Builders
