Anyone use a pre-mortum for deals they do? Idea is simple (and I stole it from Daniel Kahneman) - instead of a post-mortum years after a deal goes wrong, do a pre-mortum where you tell a narrative from 3-5 years in the future discussing why the company imploded. Why? We're natural storytellers and our brains are wired to connect with stories more so than data. We always tell stories about success ("expansion into Calgary will drive the sales growth we want to see"). Instead, we tell stories about failure ("we tried expanding into Calgary, but the GM we hired didn't have enough supervision and the market was saturated. It cost us $5mm and we ended up never creating marginal value"). If, after hearing our best stories, we don't think the data supports the assumptions required to fail (e.g., "we've established the market has no competitive pressure; we've established that their current BD guy would be perfect to be a GM and already works without supervision"), we continue onwards. However, when we spot real threats based on these narratives, we have an opportunity to either verify the assumptions we need to disprove it, think about whether there's an alternative approach, or just move on from the deal. We just started doing it internally and, while it feels a bit dorky at times, seems like a good procedure so far.

What makes a fantastic investor relations person? Of the many investor relations people I met, most are great. 2 of them stand out in my mind as *stellar*. Before I explain what makes them stellar, I'll tell you a story. A number of years ago, I attended a CRE conference, where most attendees were GPs. During a panel discussion, a question arose about working with retail money. To my astonishment, one of the GPs made a disparaging remark about $25-50k retail checks: I paraphrase, but roughly "the smallest checks ask too many questions, and suck up too much time." This particular GP group works predominantly with individual investors. The best LPs I know start all GP relationships with investment minimums and ask *a lot* of questions. Guess what story I tell every time this GP's name came up? But back to investor relations. What makes a great IR person is their willingness to answer A LOT of questions without making prospective investors feel like they are "sucking up the time" regardless of investment amount. It doesn't mean they know all the answers, but within a reasonable amount of time they can supply them. What sets the 2 stellar people apart is the fact that they are constantly improving. Every interaction with them amazes me with their depth of knowledge and consistency in response. They are genuinely curious about the industry they are in. I can call and ask questions about competitors, and their opinion carries weight in my mind. I harbor no illusions, I sucked up a lot of their time - I'm yet to invest with one of the groups after years of watching their offerings. But they earned my respect, and by association, I recognize that the companies they chose to work for are worth considering.
