President Ursula von der Leyen’s announcement of the first-ever EU Anti-Poverty Strategy is a positive step towards addressing poverty across Europe. However, for this strategy to truly succeed, it must be ambitious and adopt an integrated, inclusive, and intersectional approach across all EU policies. The focus must shift from blaming those living in poverty for their circumstances to empowering them and addressing systemic inequalities to prevent further social division. Most importantly, the strategy must center the voices of people experiencing poverty in its design and implementation. The goal should not merely be to alleviate poverty but to eradicate it entirely. Simply put: there can be no effective Anti-Poverty Strategy without including those most affected. Let’s ensure this becomes a strategy for real change. #AntiPovertyStrategy #EndPovety!
Since its foundation in 1990, EAPN has been advocating for an EU Anti-Poverty Strategy! 💬 While we welcome the announcement of the first-ever EU Anti-Poverty Strategy by the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, we also demand for a comprehensive and ambitious strategy that pursues the eradication of poverty. 📢 On the 28 November, the People's Summit will bring together people experiencing poverty, EAPN national members, political key stakeholders, and grassroots organisations. This edition will focus on gathering insights on the future process and content of the upcoming EU Anti-Poverty Strategy. Do you want to support the efforts for an ambitious EU Anti-Poverty Strategy? Our FY 23/24 Impact Report is about to be released and reports a 56% increase in demand for our services. Yes, you read correctly - 56%! Poverty in Melbourne is a real issue, and we can't keep ignoring it - but what are we doing about it? What's the government doing about it? All I hear are a LOT of words but very little action...it's hard not to let it get you down. Ben sums it up well in this article - https://lnkd.in/g3Kegrrt
This is Ben Vasiliou our CEO, back when he was growing up in public housing in Hastings with his mum and sisters. A sad reality is poverty means the odds are against you right from the get-go, making it extremely hard to pull yourself out of this position. But with the right support and people around you, just like Ben had, you can break the cycle of disadvantage. 💙 As we come together for Anti-Poverty Week to raise awareness, let's also challenge the stigma surrounding poverty and commit to creating a society where everyone has the chance to thrive. Remember: 🔑 Poverty is not a choice. ⏳ Prevention and early intervention are crucial. 🤔 How do we support those living in poverty to break the cycle? Well, that's to come ... Together, we can break the cycle of poverty. 💫 Learn more ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gWS6uJxv

The morale argument compels my giving, but I wonder which arguments connect for others. For instance, in the religious example, I wonder if it's more the religious instruction or knowing that everyone else is giving. I used to think that anonymous giving was morally superior, but Singer showed the opposite. Setting a good example might increase the social norm for private giving, compounding the impact. A good reason to repost this kind of thing on LinkedIn :)

Some people experiencing #poverty might also be navigating additional disadvantages, like uninsurance or a limited support system of friends and family. For Luke Shaefer, that observation made a profound difference early in his life when his family was struggling to make ends meet. Listen today to what Shaefer, coauthor of the new book, The Injustice of Place: Uncovering the Legacy of Poverty in America, has to say about the places in America where poverty remains deep and unrelenting—and the potential for #positivechange.
