Good input – good output. Photogrammetric 3D models and entire projects will only be as good as the input data. Sound input data are photos that do not contain extreme optical flaws or inconsistencies and follow sufficient overlap and subject coverage rules. Additionally, any referencing data used in processing must be accurate for the required use case. Specialized photogrammetric hardware does exist, so even the most demanding requirements could be met when creating a digital twin.

But here’s the million-pound question: Which scanner truly reigns supreme? To confidently advise our clients, we leave no stone unturned: • Who has the best hardware? • How fast can it capture data? • What’s the quality of the output? • How easy is the processing? • What are the ideal conditions for use? • How does software integration boost the workflow? • And of course, how does cost impact it all? Spoiler alert: There’s no one-size-fits-all scanner. Recently, we hosted two industry leading manufacturers Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon and FARO Technologies at our studio to find out the fine detail about the follwoing scanners: • Faro Orbis • Faro Focus • Leica BLK2GO • Leica BLK360 G2 Here’s what we learned: 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀: The gold standard for detailed 3D modelling and Scan-to-BIM workflows. Think precision, high-quality data, and jaw-dropping detail. With cutting-edge features like higher resolution cameras (Leica BLK360 G2) and external device compatibility (Faro Focus), these scanners are perfect for static environments and detailed surveys. 𝗦𝗟𝗔𝗠 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀: Once the underdog, SLAM is now rewriting the rules. Devices like the Orbis and BLK2GO shine in dynamic environments, with lightning-fast data acquisition and on-the-fly processing. But there’s a catch—the final detail doesn’t yet match terrestrial scanners. So, how do you choose? It all comes down to your project’s needs. Are you prioritising speed or detail?
