Community Specialist | Discord Expert | Passionate video game developer

It's been 3 weeks since I was laid off and to be honest with myself, I hadn't been doing well until a couple of days ago. I wanted to share part of my journey with you as a way to close this chapter of my life and allow myself to move onto the next. (original post was 5000 characters :/) The work I did was extremely varied (thankfully) I; implemented changes to our Discord, drafted up community guidelines, created platform/Discord moderation guidelines, set up bots, planned/organized/hosted activities, scheduled events, wrote reports, improved workflow/efficiency, designed new tools, created art/games, wrote/recorded/edited tutorials, wrote community FAQ's, strategized, kept a "who's who" of creators, and much MUCH more, while engaging a growing community of beginner/expert developers, players AND those curious about the project. Frequently imposter syndrome would creep in and take hold; "I don't have the experience", "I need to learn faster" and my favourite "This user says `I suck`, are they right?!". On top of that were many personal struggles, bereivements and so found it difficult to manage work and everyday life, but I put on a smile for the community as you do. I formed strong connections with the community and colleagues, and connected with the beautiful folks in the community world. They began to ask my opinion in interviews, which came as a big shock but were great for all involved. Thankfully struggles and self doubt got easier to manage as I kept focusing, aided by the support of colleagues, I was able to overcome and flourish. After 3 years, news of the lay off hit me hard. It felt like grieving the loss of a good friend all over again. Confusion, Sadness and anger, then the self-doubt kicks in, "I guess I was't good enough", "See, I told you so" ringing in my ears. And yet, I HAD done everything asked of me, the phrase "It's just business" sums up what happened but it still cut deep. All the passion and effort I had been put in, the connections I'd made with community members and colleagues felt like they'd been for naught. Now we're here, I've taken stock of the lessons learned and I've come to some conclusions; I'm a very capable, hard working guy who cares about the community members I watch over, I'm VERY resourceful and can always find new, innovative ways to engage members. I understand myself better and have improved communication skills. I can be proud to get up every day and use my passion to drive change to add value to peoples lives. The main thing I've learned is that no matter what your dealing with, if you have the drive, passion and a good support network, you can quash your internal demons and make a difference. To those special people who have been through this journey with me (You know who you are) Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support! I hope to continue to make amazing new connections with you all and share our experiences together as I look forward to the next adventure! <3
