Joscha Bach, AI Strategist, discusses artificial intelligence, consciousness, and the nature of reality (2020). Bach explains that consciousness is fundamentally a simulation created by the mind, where the brain generates a narrative of the self and its interactions with the world. He challenges traditional views of materialism and idealism, suggesting that intelligence emerges from modeling and problem-solving, while consciousness arises from a self-reflective attention mechanism. Key Points: 🧠 Consciousness as Simulation: Consciousness is a narrative constructed by the brain, a simulated experience that helps the brain model its interactions with the world. 🧠 AI and Intelligence: Intelligence is the ability to model and predict patterns, and AI today is largely advanced information processing, automating statistics to achieve this. 🧠 Dualism vs. Idealism: Dualism separates the mind and body into two substances, while idealism suggests that the mind is primary and reality is a mental construct. Bach argues these distinctions are less clear in reality. 🧠 Emergent Complexity: Intelligence and life are deeply connected through complexity. Intelligence is the control mechanism that allows organisms to harness complexity and order from chaos. 🧠 Limitations of Neural Networks: Bach emphasizes that modern AI lacks the ability to integrate all experiences into a unified model, which limits its ability to achieve general intelligence. 🧠 Self-Reflection in AI: Bach posits that for AI to achieve general intelligence, it must develop self-awareness and the ability to reflect on its own processes and purpose, similar to how humans model themselves. 🧠 The Future of AI: AI research should focus on meta-learning and evolving its architectures to automatically discover solutions to problems, advancing beyond current neural network paradigms. 🧠 Life as Complexity Generator: Life’s purpose is to create complexity, allowing it to capture and use energy from its environment. Intelligence serves as a tool for managing and expanding this complexity. 🧠 Human Intelligence and Society: Bach suggests that much of human intelligence is limited by our biological and social constraints, and that future AI systems could potentially surpass these limitations through improved models and learning mechanisms. 🧠 Meaning and Purpose: The discussion touches on philosophical questions about meaning, with Bach arguing that meaning is generated by the mind’s identification with its purposes and its engagement with the world, rather than being an inherent quality of life. #learningdispatch #aieducation #ai #artificialintelligence #machinelearning #businessintelligence #technology #futureofwork #innovation #automation #aitools https://lnkd.in/g6hKqibn

Such an interesting and insightful conversation. This episode from #RSMdigihealth is great for those with a passion for innovation and digital transformation. Love this point: 'Equity requires tailoring the need for that specific person. To get the same outcome not everybody needs the same input'. What a gem 💎💎💎. Great that embodied cognition was discussed in the context of ethics and AI. Amazing !! Great work Dr Annabelle Painter and Jessica Rose Morley, PhD. https://lnkd.in/eCYabbSk

For those doubting the utility of AI, consider this: traditionally, it might take a PhD student 4-5 years to uncover just one protein structure. Yet, AI technology, like AlphaFold, has mapped over 200 million protein structures in a single year—a task that would otherwise take a billion years of human effort. This staggering achievement demonstrates that AI’s impact goes far beyond what we typically imagine. It highlights how AI can drive discoveries at a pace and scale previously unthinkable, transforming our approach to solving complex scientific challenges. Embracing AI isn’t just about technological adoption; it’s about realizing its potential to rapidly advance human knowledge and improve lives. Let’s open our minds to the possibilities. #AI #TechnologySkepticism #ScientificInnovation #ExponentialImpact

One of the best interviews of Kahneman. He believes that there are no inherent limitations to what AI can accomplish compared to human skills and that it has the potential to outperform humans in various domains. #AI4All Rohit Bansal https://lnkd.in/gAGw7vWx "So what is going to happen in the world of AI is absolutely fascinating. I wish I could be there to see it." Q: Well, it's happening fast enough that that may well come true. I know it's impossible and probably antithetical to the way you think about things to make predictions on this, but are there kind of very human-specific skills that AI is not going to be able to replicate? DK: In principle, no. I mean, you know, all the decisions we make when we speak of being created and that the AI is not really created, I mean, creativity is a new way to assemble existing ideas in our head. All our insight, all our creative insights, they come from somewhere, and they come from the experience and from putting things together that haven't been put together before. This is not beyond the ability of AI, clearly. So I do not see anything that, in principle, AI cannot do better than people."
