Officially launching: Service Design Network Berlin Chapter! 🎉 I am pleased to announce the establishment of the SDN Berlin Chapter, in collaboration with my esteemed colleagues and partners, Angel, Bettina and Adam 🥳 We recently asked a group of wonderful service design leaders and community members from Berlin: “how can SDN Berlin Chapter best contribute to our community?” In this post, we want to share what we heard from the community, the SDN Berlin Chapter’s vision, what you can expect from us, and how you can stay updated and get involved. What we heard from the community 💡 ▪️ Senior designers and design leaders are craving spaces to discuss and debate themes focused on specific areas of influence and work. There is a desire to bring together people who deeply understand their domains for more peer-to-peer learning and exchange, (e.g. in house designers who work in e-commerce). ▪️ Many shared that they see an opportunity for service design to ‘go to’ other industries to build stronger connections with people we collaborate with, (e.g. health professionals, farmers, entrepreneurs, etc). This could be through event or project collaborations, or literally going to other industry events. ▪️ Overall, there is demand for curated, targeted events & initiatives that enable deep connection, peer learning and outreach. Vision for the SDN Berlin Chapter 🎯 Our ambition is to amplify the impact of service design by creating a platform that brings designers and industry partners together. We want to foster collaboration and healthy exchange between these groups so that we can deepen our understanding of each other, and ultimately, create better outcomes together. Perhaps it’s my age. Or perhaps I’ve always been easily pleased. But I get a real kick out of witnessing the speed with which they can get the place turned around at these big exhibition venues. (In fact, I saw one guy laying carpet down so quickly, I reckon he could single-handedly do the work of half the fitters at my local Carpetright) As you may know, we were at the ‘PropTech’ show at London ExCeL a few weeks ago, chatting with others in the industry (and making our way through plenty of obligatory lukewarm coffees and stale pastries). Thing is, I’d be lying if I said I LOVE going to exhibitions. I’d much rather spend a few hours on my bike, or enjoying a coffee in the comfort of my own office, than spend 2 days on my feet after schlepping across London and getting an exhibition stand assembled. But all of that said, I see huge amounts of value in spending a couple of days with others from the industry - getting to know our customers better and developing a deeper understanding of how we can make their lives easier. Looking forward to being the behavior design expert for this conversation in two weeks! Packaging is one of the most tangible ways we experience consumption. Have you ever noticed the SIZE of US household trash cans compared to others around the world? We have these ginormous bin we take out to the curve filled with a lot of packaging. In my travels, the US is #1 in curbside bin size. How come? Why do we have so much packaging? How can we minimize it? How do we: - balance the tension between packaging to ship and protect the product - design packaging as an expression of brand and experience - avoid packaging that goes toward cheap and enviornmentall wasteful and move toward something a bit more intentionally designed with a smaller environmental footprint? Yeah it’s on consumer behavior but not 100%. Product designers, packaging designers, brand designers all have a hand in this too.
