Week 2: Make the choice to belong. It’s easy to feel lonely in college. Maybe you look around and it feels like everyone else has found their team, or their organization, or their place, and you haven’t. Or maybe you have found your place but even in a crowded room you feel like you’re the only one. You see everyone else posting about their amazing connections and best friends and your feed looks empty in comparison. We have an epidemic of loneliness around the world. Learning how to meaningfully connect with others right now will help you at DePauw but it will also teach you lessons you’ll carry with you throughout your life (and enable you to help others, too). The Surgeon General offers some practical suggestions on making meaningful connections at https://lnkd.in/gS9t29b3. A few of my favorites: Invest time in nurturing your relationships through consistent, frequent, and high-quality engagement with others. Minimize distraction during conversations to increase the quality of time you spend with others. Seek out opportunities to serve and support others. Try helping your family, friends, and community members or participating in community service. Be responsive and supportive and practice gratitude. Reflect the core values of connection in how you approach others through the actions you take and conversations you have. Actively engage with people of different backgrounds and experiences to expand your understanding of and relationships with others. My hope for you this week is that you take the first step to a meaningful connection this week. Every week while classes are in session I send a message of encouragement to the DePauw student body. This is today's.

I've been thinking about how we'll publicize our burgeoning programs, Educate and Experience. So I checked out how my local @austinpubliclibrary branch handled community plugs. The bulletin board at Ruiz Branch is pretty overwhelming... but that doesn't mean we don't publicize in this way. It just means it won't be our only means of publicity + we'll keep our flyers simple To refine our programs, we are getting clarity on these three things at once: (1) Refining our "front door" - how do we get sign-ups? (2) Refining our curriculum - what is valuable to participants, and how do we convey it? (2) Revenue - being reliable costs staff time and tools, which costs money Thanks for doing this work with me: @viviomj @paul.v.haar Thanks everyone who graciously granted informational interviews in the spring: Peter B., CapMetro Lisa Chang and Cinde Weatherby, League of Women Voters Austin Area Sergio Torres-Peralta, Office of Sustainability Prakhar Bajpai, Innovation Office Corina Preston, Communications and Technology Management Kate Nicholson, BetaNYC Eric Kotin, Lead For America
