In recent years, renewable energy costs have seen a remarkable decline, surpassing fossil fuels in affordability. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the global weighted average cost of electricity from solar PV fell by **85%** between 2010 and 2020, from around **$0.381/kWh** to **$0.057/kWh**. Similarly, the cost of onshore wind dropped by **56%**, from **$0.089/kWh** to **$0.039/kWh**. In contrast, fossil fuel energy costs have been more volatile, with the average cost of coal and natural gas electricity generation in 2020 ranging between **$0.05-$0.17/kWh** depending on the region and fuel prices. As a result, in many countries, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are now **40-60%** cheaper than new fossil fuel plants, making renewables a clear economic choice for future energy production.
🆕IRENA report underlines that 81% of renewable additions in 2023 were cheaper than fossil fuels, with notable reductions in solar and wind energy. Renewable power deployed since 2000 has saved up to $409 billion in fuel costs in the power sector. Learn how renewables are offering countries a compelling business and investment: bit.ly/3ZuWsv8
