In the context of 5GW, this technique is used to achieve strategic objectives, such as undermining trust in institutions, creating divisions within societies, and shaping public opinion. It is often used in conjunction with other tactics, such as disinformation, psychological warfare, and cyber warfare, to create a comprehensive information campaign. #How liars create the 'illusion of truth'“Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth”, is a law of propaganda often attributed to the Nazi Joseph Goebbels.

Limits of Australian Power: defeating Russian information warfare "the cyber threats posed by Russia cannot be entirely or even significantly neutralized by the federal government" This is what two former CIA officers wrote in 2020 (https://lnkd.in/gRF3jP8u). They were right then and remain right today. The same is true of Australia. Canberra can't even decide who is in charge of defeating Russian disinformation. The federal government actually panders to some of its Russia's passive allies in the mainstream media, without holding them to account for relaying Russian disinformation. The Australian government has half an excuse though. "There are legal constraints that properly protect the notions we value in democracies, such as freedom of speech and privacy rights", the former US official rightly point out.    They call for a "well-regulated militia" as a solution based on citizen activism: "all Americans, regardless of political bent, should understand that they are really the front line of cyber defense". The former spies add little detail but their idea is good. Look for work on this idea (an infowar militia) by the Social Cyber Institute (a paper to be released on 8 July and webinar on 25 July), featuring Professor Dav Svantesson from Bond University.

Not all in need have enough to meet their needs. This is as true in life, generally, as it is with all things cyber and data-related. This guidance from the FBI Cyber Division on the ways entities with limited budgets can still meet a reasonable baseline of security is an invaluable resource.

It seems that antisemitic attacks are now increasing in cyberspace. I received the email below from one of our stellar Aish.com staff members about unprecedented attacks on aish.com. We will stand strong against all the enemies of the Jewish people. ——————- Hi, Today, Tuesday Aug 20, we have been having an ongoing major cyber attack on the aish.com website. The scope of this attack is unprecedented in scope for aish.com, Starting at around 10:45 am Israel time there was a sudden attack of over 11 million requests to the website in the course of several minutes. This caused the website to stop responding for between 5-10 minutes. I was immediately notified of that by our monitoring tools that we have in place. After investigating the issue I noticed a major DDoS attack. What is DDoS? In computing, a denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) is a cyber-attack in which the perpetrator seeks to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host connected to a network. Denial of service is typically accomplished by flooding the targeted machine or resource with superfluous requests in an attempt to overload systems and prevent some or all legitimate requests from being fulfilled. For the aish.com server on May 11, 2024 we added extra security protection to prevent these attacks. We use Cloudflare Enterprise for this. They are rated as having one of the top DDoS protection tools & services. This attack has been continuing since then and is now over 219M DDoS requests since it started. B"H the aish.com website is functioning properly during this time and has had no additional down time since those initial first few minutes. I will update you on any important changes. May Hashem protect us, and all of Klal Yisrael, from our enemies.

U.S. Department of State Rewards for Justice program is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the identification or location of any person who, while acting at the direction or under the control of a foreign government, participates in malicious cyber activities against U.S. critical infrastructure in violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). Vladislav Borovkov (Боровков Владислав), Denis Igorevich Denisenko (Денисенко Денис Игоревич), Yuriy Denisov (Денисов Юрий), Dmitriy Yuryevich Goloshubov (Голошубов Дмитрий Юрьевич), and Nikolay Aleksandrovich Korchagin (Корчагин Николай Александрович) are Russian military intelligence officers with Unit 29155 of the Russian General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). These individuals targeted and compromised computer systems, including Ukrainian government systems associated with critical infrastructure, using “WhisperGate” malware. GRU hackers deployed WhisperGate malware in advance of Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine in a series of destructive cyber attacks against Ukrainian government agencies and private sector organizations. GRU malicious cyber activity also targeted U.S. critical infrastructure and included efforts to scan for vulnerabilities, map networks, and identify potential website vulnerabilities in U.S.-based critical infrastructure – particularly the energy, government, and aerospace sectors. In addition to targeting Ukrainian networks, these five Unit 29155 GRU officers are also responsible for targeting or compromising critical infrastructure in dozens of Western allied countries. They are believed to have played a role deploying destructive malware and to take other disruptive cyber actions through unauthorized access to victims’ computers for the strategic benefit of Russia. https://lnkd.in/eqUxcFka
