This week I've connected with several candidates who are struggling in this market. This is nothing new- at least for those of us recruiting. Both candidates asked "What am I doing wrong?" "Is there anything I can do with my resume?" "Remote roles are less and less, do I now have to commute over an hour each way?"..... so many questions! Both resumes were great! I gave them both tips on changes, how to adjust their searches and to remain as positive as they could and not take it personal. This market is BRUTAL! The amount of layoffs and minimal jobs have saturated the market. Managers have options and they're going to take their sweet little time to make moves. So apply, apply, apply! Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Be patient. As a recruiter it's my job to be real and educate them. Tell them about the market, tell them what they're up against and give advice in hopes that they may see some movement. Here are the tips I provided! 🔸When you're applying, please fully read the job description ❗ ❗ ❗ 🔸What is it asking and does your resume align? 🔸What key words are they using and does your resume reflect the same? If not, make these edits. 🔸Ensure your bullet points speak to your skills. Don't be vague or short. Be specific. 🔸Is your resume busy? Check your font- do you have different styles/sizes that are maybe excessive? Are there different size fonts under your job descriptions? 🔸Do you have periods after each sentences or no? Make sure they all look the same. If you're applying for a role that is asking for attention to detail, this can be a red flag. 🔸Are your previous roles in the same tense or are you mixing past and present tense between roles? Pick one and run with it. I recommend using past tense for all previous roles and present for your current job. 🔸Please remove pictures! This will avoid discrimination. 🔸Your resume does not have to be a PDF, Word works. Recruiters prefer it. 🔸Do NOT put your full address - City and State is just fine! You don't need to pay for someone to do your resume and if you do, please make sure they are reputable. I've seen too many resumes with incorrect dates, wrong titles and these can hinder you. If hiring decisions are made solely based on attitude rather than skills and experience, we're setting ourselves up for failure. While having the right mindset is valuable, skills and experience are crucial in getting the job done. Sure, a good skill set is essential, but if you can't effectively showcase your skills, what's the point? I often find posts filled with idealistic notions, but where are the practical solutions? At the end of the day, the real world isn't built on fantasies—it's built on skill, hard work, and experience. When a client communicates in a professional manner, should my team respond with morals or the necessary expertise? Work is driven by skills, effort, and experience. If someone lacks these, my role is to motivate and train them, not just hire based on attitude. How can I help someone else grow if I don’t prioritize my own professional growth first? Even if we're talking about hiring freshers, having the right attitude alone won't cut it. You can’t get the job done with attitude alone. If you’re going to make a point, make sure it’s well-rounded. Making blanket statements is not only unrealistic but also unwise.

Some companies just hire resumes. If yours isn’t perfect, you won’t have a shot with them. But not every company is like that. Many prefer to hire good people who might not have the most impressive history. Keep looking, and you’ll find them.

"In the time it's taking you to hire an *A Player,* you could have hired 3 B Players by now." Spoken like a true internal recruiter. This really happened to me. My internal recruiter was not happy with the amount of candidates I was rejecting. We agreed on the characteristics I was looking for yet she continued to send me junk but then tried to pressure me to lower my standards. 👉 Don't fall for that. Don't do that. I didn't do that. It doesn't serve you well and only temporarily helps your internal recruiter. What does it cost you when you settle for B Players as opposed to waiting to select A Players?
