Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans for “Ultracluster,” a large-scale AI supercomputer powered by its homegrown Trainium chips, alongside the launch of a new server, Ultraserver. The Ultracluster, part of Project Rainier, will consist of hundreds of thousands of Trainium chips and will be operational in the U.S. by 2025. It will support AI training for Anthropic, an AI startup recently received a $4 billion investment from Amazon. Amazon just announced a new suite of Foundation Models: Amazon Nova. This is yet again a new shift from Amazon Web Services (AWS). I think, over the last 2 years, AWS focused on providing the infrastructure for deploying Generative AI solutions while staying agnostic to specific models and only leveraging strategic partnerships with some vendors like Anthropic. But today, they're entering the game with their own models, again. They had Amazon Titan models before, but they didn't promote them or market them the same way at the time, they were focused on gaining the biggest marketshare of GenAI infrastructure. This move reinforces Amazon AWS's position as a strong and established cloud provider with AI models similar that can be standardized and optimized with the infrastructure, making it even easier for customers to leverage off-the-shelf solutions and serverless technology even more. This can also optimize the performance and cost efficiency for AWS customers (reported to be ~75% cheaper) that might end up getting the best of two worlds: models and infrastructure bundled together streamlining the whole process for developers and customers. They are also getting into the AI Chip and supercomputers... 🤔 Finally, AWS can use the feedback from its customers to tailor their offering for specific industry verticals where Gen AI adoption is accelerating. Some people might think they are late in the Foundation Models battle and Nova's scores in the benchmarks are not disruptive, but as I said before, I believe this is a strategic move to close the loop on AI implementations offering the whole package at a competitive cost and optimized performance. Amazon is considering a second multibillion-dollar investment in Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI. However, a key point of negotiation between the companies is which chips Anthropic will use to train its Claude models. AWS is pushing for Anthropic to use a significant number of servers powered by its in-house chips. Anthropic, however, prefers Amazon servers equipped with Nvidia's AI chips. The total size of Amazon’s investment may ultimately depend on the outcome of this discussion, particularly on the number of Amazon chips Anthropic agrees to utilize. More details in The Information:

Austin, Texas is a tech innovation center for major advancements in the near future. Amazon bought Annapurna, the maker of the newly announced chips that cut AI training and workload bills in half, and planted all of the design operations together. Then Amazon inked a deal with Anthropic, arguably the most innovative application of AI models at the moment to use those chips. Add the amazing new SageMaker workflows, features and user experience for making custom AI solutions and running it on fantastic infrastructure. Wow! Think about the industry players like Snowflake and Databricks, who have compute and infrastructure workloads on Amazon that they could silently distribute workloads too and reduce their on costs and make a decision to pass that on or not to customers. I am watching to see if open standards prevail and to what extend they allow interoperability. It’s great for customers that all the big guys are investing hard to commoditize and expand access to these services. Time to round out my research looking at Microsoft and Google.
