July is Disability pride month, yet I mentioned to Jodie 💜 Greer yesterday that I found this month so far to be really uplifting but also deflating. So many fantastic uplifting posts about people being unapologetically themselves and using this month to educate others. So many companies have held events, workshops and attended talks and webinars to mark the month. These companies really embrace learning and developing, they are true allies. These companies welcome disabled customers and are striving to be inclusive and progressive. Good on them! But too many posts I see are from brands who offer products and services to the disabled community and are supposedly proud to support the disabled community. These companies want to be seen as an ally, only they don’t even meet the basic minimum of accessibility in their posts. I genuinely feel quite deflated by seeing posts full of emojis, with the use of unclear language and hashtags that aren’t camel or pascal case and even missing alt text or photo ID out altogether. 🤦♀️ Your inaccessible captions, your low contrast images, I could go on for ages! There’s only one conclusion I can come to. You are not an ally and are not a brand that truly embraces disabled people, therefore my potential brand loyalty will be shifted and my perception changed. Know your audience, it’s the first rule of marketing. If you want more disabled customers and you think the way to do this is by showing your support of disability pride month at leasst make it inaccessible, Otherwise, it’s classic tokenism. It’s empty support that people can see through. #DisabilityPrideMonth #AccessibilityMatters #SocialMedia #DigitalMarketing #DigitalAccessibility #a11y

July is Disability Pride Month! This month we commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law on July 26, 1990. Every day is a time to celebrate people with disabilities, their identities, and contributions to society. Let's create more space for disabled individuals and embrace acceptance, ensuring everyone can thrive and feel valued. Here are some ways to advocate for inclusion within your daily life: • Educate Yourself: Learn about disabilities and challenges faced. • Use Inclusive Language: Be mindful and respectful. • Promote Accessibility: Advocate for ramps, elevators, and accessible spaces. • Support Disability-Owned Businesses: Shop and share. • Be an Ally: Support voices, challenge stereotypes. • Volunteer: Help organizations supporting disabilities. • Ensure Digital Accessibility: Use alt text, captions. • Advocate for Policies: Support inclusive legislation. • Be Considerate: Offer seats, hold doors. • Listen and Learn: Understand and engage. Together, we can create an inclusive world! #DisabilityPride #AcceptanceForAll #MakeSpace #EmbraceAcceptance #InclusionMatters

December 3rd is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. 👇 #IDPD aims to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities, raise awareness, and celebrate their achievements. This year’s theme, "amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future," highlights the importance of their participation in decision-making processes. Here are some ways your business can take meaningful action: 🙌 Help out organizations that support individuals with disabilities, either through monetary donations or volunteer work with your team. 🙌 Conduct an Accessibility & DEI Audit to identify opportunities to remove physical & systemic barriers in your workplace (which our team of specialists would be happy to support you with!) 🙌 Include and consult folks with disabilities in decision-making processes (for example, when creating new policies or designing workspaces). Even small actions, like amplifying their voices and learning from their experiences, can make a big impact. Remember: the most important part is to just start somewhere! ✨ #IDPD #InternationalDayOfPeopleWithDisabilities #IDPD2024 #Accessibility #DEI #RemovingWorkplaceBarriers

Input Wanted in Colorado: The Task Force Related to the Rights of Coloradans with Disabilities is seeking public input. Through four subcommittees, the Task Force is developing ideas on a broad range of issues from housing and outdoor recreation to government services and the rights detailed in Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act (CADA). For the past year, more than 40 Coloradans have been examining the current systems, hearing from those with lived experience and experts from government, non-profit and the private sector and discussing potential solutions to existing barriers or shortfalls in today’s systems. Prior to developing their recommendations, the four subcommittees are sharing initial ideas online for public input. Public input is open now through October 21st. Click the link below to provide input the ideas being considered. https://bit.ly/1296ideas
