ERRIN Director, Pirita Lindholm, recently shared her insights on the importance of the upcoming Week of Innovative Regions in Europe 2024 conference in an article published by Science|Business. 🗨️Reflecting on the future regional innovation funding, Pirita stated “On the one hand we would like to see much stronger support for place-based ecosystems in the future framework programme, maybe throughout the programme, but also potentially strengthening existing programmes like the European Innovation Ecosystems (EIE), which supports the regional innovation valleys initiative." The #WIRE2024 conference in Budapest will bring together key voices in regional R&I to address regional development challenges and shape the future of EU innovation policy, including discussions on #FP10 and initiatives like #RegionalInnovationValleys. The conference is crucial in the context of the discussions on the Multiannual Financial Framework post-2027. "crowding in”, where private VC investment is encouraged by the presence of public funding, can lead to several beneficial effects for startups and technological innovation. It’s high on the national political agenda. Recently Nicolai Tangen complained about how risk averse we are in Europe. Ironically he “see the speck in his brother's eye, but do not see the beam in the pension fund”. Norway, IN and RCN can learn a lot from EIC, Europes leading innovation fund, on how to crowd in private investors into deep tech and future technology. Deep tech startups and SMEs not only position themselves as leaders in their respective fields but also contribute significantly to technological progress and economic growth.

The future of European competitiveness is built on today’s investment in research and innovation. I welcome the clear messages of the Heitor Report. The Report recommends stimulating more industrial RD&I investment, underpinned by state-of-the-art Technology Infrastructures and many other important suggestions for the next months and years ahead. At the Prosperity directorate we do our best to make this happen.
🔬 How can we achieve a more impactful, streamlined & targeted EU #research & #innovation funding, harnessing Europe’s full potential and diverse talent pool? An independent group of 15 leading experts, chaired by Manuel Heitor, has presented to the Commission their recommendations to strengthen Horizon Europe, the EU research and innovation programme, and its successor. "Unleashing the full potential of the European #innovation ecosystem" - this was the title of a timely conference organised by the European University Association and the Hungarian Presidency on the day after the presentation of Mario Draghi's report on the future of European competitiveness (see my previous post). Here are 3️⃣ thoughts that emerged from the discussion with my fellow panelists Tor Hernes MANUEL IRUN MOLINA Annick Castiaux, PhD Barnabas Malnay, led by the moderator Kamila Kozirog 💡 #innovation ecosystems tend to be fragmented as a result of the concentration of innovation around geographic hubs. Such fragmentation may not in itself be a problem as long as 1) connections between ecosystems allow knowledge, talent and capital to move freely, 2) there is sufficient investment in building and strengthening innovation ecosystems in less developed regions, 3) the benefits of innovation are spread equitably. 💶 there is a need for better alignment of EU, national and regional #innovation policy and funding (both public and private). EU public funding of R&I makes up app. 10% of total public R&I funding in the EU - 90% coming from EU Member States. 🚀 smart specialisation by regions around breakthrough technologies most relevant for the EU's #competitiveness will be key to overcome the mid-technology trap (https://lnkd.in/eVEVkXmh) Anna Panagopoulou Alexandr Hobza Paweł Świeboda Michiel Scheffer Keith Sequeira Jekaterina Novikova Magda De Carli Ágota Dávid Natasa Kurucki Martin Kern Isidro Laso Ágota Dávid Luca Perego Catherine Wendt Paola Momoli Gerald CULTOT
