The Terai region of Nepal, often referred to as the country’s breadbasket, is endowed with significant replenishable groundwater resources. These offer immense potential for sustainable agricultural growth, yet remain largely untapped. Through the CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains, International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is exploring the potential of solarizing deep tube wells in Terai, to enhance reliable year-round irrigation and provide equitable irrigation resources to small- and medium-sized farmers. They offer reduced greenhouse gas emissions, no running costs, and can offer underprivileged farmers access to deeper and more reliable aquifers than shallow tube wells. ☀️🔋💦 The transition to solar-powered irrigation (SIP) in South Asia presents a valuable opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lessen reliance on costly diesel. Given the complexity of the region’s agricultural system, which is characterized by small landholdings and tenant farmers, a diverse range of institutional models is essential for effectively scaling SIPs. In this article, IWMI researchers explore three distinct solar irrigation pump (SIP) implementation models currently in use in Bangladesh. These models offer a unique opportunity to evaluate and gain insights into the solarization process, providing valuable lessons that can be applied to neighboring countries facing similar challenges. Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, Introduces Solar Irrigation Project For Agricultural Enhancement In a collaborative effort between the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) of Nueva Vizcaya and a mining firm, a solar irrigation project has been initiated to bolster agricultural productivity in the province. Named ‘Padanum ti Umili,’ this project will be executed by the PLGU in partnership with Oceana Gold Philippines, Inc. through a Memorandum of Agreement. The primary objective of the project is to provide a dependable water supply for corn and vegetable farming areas across lowland municipalities. It utilizes solar energy to power irrigation systems, aiming to increase crop yields and promote environmental sustainability. Funded by OGPI’s Provincial Development […] Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/dwMcy8bW #solarenergy #alternativeenergy #solarpv #pvsolar #photovoltaic #cleanenergy #cleantech #climatechange #middleeast #africa #india #asiapacific #asia #nuevavizcaya #philippines #renewableenergy #solarenergy #solar-poweredirrigation #southeastasia

Solar Irrigation is Need of the Time: Pakistan's unchecked tube well expansion demands urgent action. With over 1.3 million #tubeWells, groundwater #depletion is #rampant, exacerbated by a lack of regulatory oversight. Transitioning to #solar #powered #tubewells offers a game-changing solution, #saving Rs100bn annually and #conserving 4,000MWs of electricity. This shift is crucial as #irrigation # demands surge beyond 110km3 by 2025, largely reliant on #groundwater. It's time for Pakistan to embrace solar irrigation technology for #sustainable water management and agricultural resilience. P.S: Aftab Ahmad Chattha, Ph.D. also installed solar irrigation technology in his fields marks a significant step towards transformation and sustainable farming practices, Ma shaAllah. 🚨 Onseepkans Bulk Water Supply Project 🚨 BVi Consulting Engineers - BVi Group successfully completed the Onseepkans Bulk Water Supply project. It was a big milestone at a total investment of R120M. This project represents a critical upgrade to the region's water infrastructure, ensuring efficient irrigation for local farming and boosting agricultural productivity. The project repaired and upgraded the existing system, transforming it from an outdated earth canal to a modern pumping system. This upgrade currently supplies water to 370 hectares of farming plots, with the potential to expand to 620 hectares in the future—empowering the local agricultural community. Key components of the new system include: 🔹 A river and booster pump station, delivering filtrated water through a 900mm GRP rising main to a 38,000m³ storage earth dam. 🔹 A 700mm GRP gravity main, ensuring a steady flow of water from the storage dam to the 370ha of plots. 🔹 A 10km distribution network of UPVC pipes (200mm to 560mm dia), with 30 irrigation hydrants for easy access and efficient water distribution. In an exciting development, a 1MW Solar PV system has been recently integrated into the Onseepkans irrigation scheme. This clean energy solution, combined with the existing ESKOM supply, will significantly reduce pumping costs and improve the sustainability of the system, making it an environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient solution for the future. This project not only supports the local farmers but also demonstrates BVi’s commitment to sustainable, energy-efficient infrastructure that benefits communities and the environment. #BViProjects #WaterInfrastructure #SustainableAgriculture #SolarEnergy #CommunityDevelopment #Onseepkans

📰CGIAR #IntheNews Is there a downside to solar-powered irrigation? While these systems offer significant benefits in reducing poverty and enhancing livelihoods, researchers, including Soumya Balasubramanya, a former CGIAR researcher, caution that they may not always result in lower carbon emissions and can lead to increased groundwater depletion. #EU, UNDP launch #solar-powered drip irrigation system for local households in #Uzbekistan The new drip irrigation system has been introduced in #Akkurgan District, Tashkent Region — an area known for its challenging #watersupply conditions. The system includes a water pump that extracts water from a vertical well at a depth of 180 meters, with the support of #solarpanels. Today the system irrigates 0,8 hectares of land, benefiting 10 households and saving close to 60% of water compared to traditional irrigation methods, the EU Delegation said. #solar #solarpanel #solarplant #renewableenergy #Uzbekistan #sustainability #DripIrrigationSystem https://lnkd.in/gD2nqvbU

Exciting news! Power for All's research on solar irrigation awareness in Ethiopia, which I co-authored, has been published by CGIAR. Here are some key insights from our study: 💡 We observed a low level of awareness regarding solar water pumps (SWPs) in Ethiopia. 💡 The practice of irrigation emerged as a significant determinant of SWP awareness, with irrigating farmers being twice as likely to be aware of SWPs compared to non-irrigating farmers. 💡 We also found that providing equipment financing is critical to stimulate demand for SWPs. The equipment finance scheme needs to be long-term, recognizing the payback period of the technology and ensuring affordability. You can access the full research report at the link below. Feel free to leave your comments and/or questions in the comments section. Lastly, I would like to thank CGIAR for publishing our research. https://lnkd.in/ec3jvSdj #RenewableEnergy #SustainableDevelopment #EndEnergyPovertyFaster #EnergyAccess #SDG7 #SDG2
