CGIAR Impact Area: Environmental health & biodiversity’s Post

The Terai region of Nepal, often referred to as the country’s breadbasket, is endowed with significant replenishable groundwater resources. These offer immense potential for sustainable agricultural growth, yet remain largely untapped. Through the CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains, International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is exploring the potential of solarizing deep tube wells in Terai, to enhance reliable year-round irrigation and provide equitable irrigation resources to small- and medium-sized farmers. They offer reduced greenhouse gas emissions, no running costs, and can offer underprivileged farmers access to deeper and more reliable aquifers than shallow tube wells.
