🌈 This Pride Month and every day of the year, we celebrate and support our 2SLGBTQIA+ colleagues and allies. Our commitment to equality and inclusion is at the heart of our values, and we're determined to foster an environment where everyone can reach their full potential. We say it, we celebrate it but we know we still have much to learn and ways to improve. I am proud to be a trans, queer, non-binary professional in a leadership role. 🌈 In an era where diversity and inclusion are essential, queer professionals in St. Louis are not just part of the conversation—they're leading it. From championing inclusive policies to creating environments where everyone feels they belong, these trailblazers are transforming workplaces and changing hearts and minds. 🔑 Key Highlights: Policy Changes: Queer professionals are driving significant policy changes, such as implementing gender-neutral restrooms, updating non-discrimination policies, and introducing comprehensive benefits for LGBTQ+ employees. Inclusive Cultures: Initiatives led by queer individuals are fostering inclusive and supportive workplace cultures, from employee resource groups to mentorship programs. Impact on St. Louis: The broader impact on the St. Louis community is undeniable, promoting a more inclusive and progressive city that values and celebrates diversity. 📍 One compelling example is APA St. Louis. Our efforts have not only transformed our workplace but have also inspired others in the community to embrace and advocate for queer joy and inclusivity. As the former Director of Communications at PROMO and the current Director of Communications at APA, I have witnessed firsthand the strides made by queer professionals in shaping policies and fostering inclusive environments. Reflection on this Pride Month (June) on Embracing Diversity and Inclusion. As a HR professional, I understand the vital importance of fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Pride Month is a perfect time to reflect on how we can better support our LGBTQ colleagues and create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. Too often, I witness comments about coworkers’ beliefs and preferences. It’s crucial to remember that our belief systems may differ, but this shouldn’t lead to judgment or disrespect. Respecting differences and encouraging an inclusive culture is key to a thriving, diverse workplace. If we want to succeed in a global context and work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, we must embrace respect and understanding. I felt so good by receiving the DMs to my previous post about moving beyond performative Pride Month celebrations. Many of you raised excellent questions and shared valuable insights on fostering year-round LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace. Here, I'd like to address 2 of the most common questions: 🔸 How can I convince my company leadership to prioritize LGBTQ+ inclusion? ▫ Gather data! Highlight the positive impact of diversity and inclusion on employee well-being, productivity, and innovation. Share best practices from other companies who are leading the way. ▫ Start small! Propose specific, achievable actions that can demonstrate the value of inclusion efforts. 🔸 How can I create a safe space for LGBTQ+ employees within my company? ▫ Champion the creation of an LGBTQ+ employee resource group (ERG). ▫ Organize informal meetups or social events for LGBTQ+ employees and allies. ▫ Ensure clear and accessible channels for reporting discrimination or harassment. Remember, fostering inclusion is a journey, not a destination. 🚀 Championing LGBTQ2+ Inclusion in the Trades 🌈 At OAWA AB we strive for inclusion and advocacy for all. Here are 6 impactful ways we can support and uplift our LGBTQ2+ colleagues to create an inclusive and welcoming environment: Use Inclusive Language: Words matter. Make a conscious effort to use gender-neutral terms and respect preferred pronouns. Simple changes can make a big difference in making everyone feel welcome. Avoid Stereotypes: Challenge assumptions and stereotypes. Celebrate the individuality and diverse skills each person brings to the table. Listen and Learn: Be open to hearing the experiences of LGBTQ2+ individuals. Listening with empathy and seeking to understand their perspectives fosters a supportive community. Diversity Training: Participate in and advocate for diversity and inclusion training. These programs are essential in educating ourselves and others about the importance of an inclusive workplace. Safe Reporting Channels: Ensure there are confidential and safe ways for reporting discrimination or harassment. Everyone should feel secure in addressing concerns without fear of retaliation. Speak Up Against Discrimination: Be an ally. Stand up and speak out when you witness discrimination or harassment. Silence can be interpreted as acceptance, so let’s use our voices to advocate for equality.
