Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric, once said that “Variation is evil.” That mindset defined his leadership approach, as he sought to eliminate risk from business operations and achieve a state of pure predictability. Yet this simply isn't viable in our modern business world, which is fast-moving and defined by near-constant disruption. While predictability is valuable and eliminating unnecessary risk is desirable, you cannot turn people into machines. Some unpredictability is unavoidable. I once witnessed a new CEO take charge of a struggling company. In his first town hall, he laid out a bold vision for turning things around. The employees were energized, expecting immediate, sweeping changes. But over the next few months, the CEO's actions seemed... underwhelming. He made small tweaks here and there, but nothing earth-shattering. Some employees grew restless, whispering that maybe he wasn't the savior they'd hoped for. Others defended him, arguing that big changes take time. What these employees didn't realize was that the CEO was playing a longer, more nuanced game. He was practicing the art of disappointing people at a rate they could absorb. You see, effective leadership isn't about making everyone happy all the time. It's about guiding people through necessary changes and challenges without overwhelming them. It's a delicate balance: 1️⃣ Move too fast, and you risk resistance, burnout, and chaos. 2️⃣ Move too slow, and you risk stagnation and loss of momentum. The best leaders understand this. They know that: 👉🏻 Every decision will disappoint someone. 👉🏻 Not every good idea can be implemented immediately. 👉🏻 People need time to adapt to change. 👉🏻 Short-term pain is often necessary for long-term gain. So, they carefully pace their decisions and actions. They communicate transparently about the challenges ahead.
