The European Defence Fund (EDF) programme attracted the interest of the EU industry: 236 proposals were received from diverse consortia, encompassing large enterprises, SMEs, midcaps, and Research and Technology organisations, covering all calls and topics published. There is comprehensive geographical coverage, with 581 legal entities from 26 EU Member States and Norway participating in the selected proposals. There is also broad cooperation within projects; on average, selected proposals involve 17 entities from 8 countries. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups are playing a significant role in the funded projects, representing over 42% of all entities in selected proposals and receiving more than 18% of the total requested EU funding. This underscores the EU Defence Fund’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting new entrants in the defence sector, ensuring a dynamic and competitive European defence industry. There is a good balance between research and capability development actions, with €265 million funding 30 research projects and €766 million funding 24 capability development projects. Support for disruptive technologies for defence is evident, with 4% of the budget dedicated to funding game-changing ideas that will bring innovation to radically change the concepts and conduct of defence projects.

Leonardo’s Chairman Highlights Maritime Domain Complexities and Innovations at World Defense Show The maritime domain is a complex and complicated environment. It includes activity on the surface of open water, closed bodies of water and navigable waterways, and also below the surface, to depths that are often unknown and unfathomable. It includes every type of human-built object, above or under water, static or moving, but must also consider the safeguarding of all the salt and freshwater creatures sharing the same domain. When addressing industry and constitutional leaders at the recent World Defense Show, Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo, Chairman Leonardo, observed that it is probably the least known and most complicated global domain, perhaps even more so than outer space. However, it is a realm that is constantly evolving, and has been the focus of intense technological development in recent years, with a growing number of critical infrastructures bound to or hosted by the domain. https://lnkd.in/d56iwZzZ

Thanks Australian Defence Magazine for publishing this latest piece from Bernice Glenn Kissinger. As the author notes "Japan's defence industry and dual-use #technology sectors have experienced significant growth and transformation in recent years. As Japan bolsters its #defence capabilities and adapts to evolving security challenges, it is increasingly turning to “dual-use” solutions to address its needs". Australian companies who are market entry level or seeking new partnerships should explore the opportunities in Japan. There is the added advantage of potential cross-over with US requirements that also suit US Forces Japan and the Japan Ministry of Defense. "There has been cooperation in R&D between Japan and the US, and more recently with Australia, for some time but this step highlights the importance of this collaborative approach to meet the #geopolitical challenges faced in the region. Australia offers experience in #aerospace, #hypersonics, #quantum, uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) (particularly long-range, heavy lift), uncrewed underwater vessels (the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator, for example, is rapidly progressing the Ghost Shark program) and others. Collaboration between Japanese and Australian companies could also facilitate #supplychain integration and promote greater interoperability between defence systems. Strategic steps forward could include joint #manufacturing, component sourcing agreements, and #logistics partnerships to streamline production and reduce costs". Anyone who happens to be in Tokyo on 3-4 June please join the Armatus.ai Symposium being held to help unpack and find solutions for some of these mutual challenges.
