All our Fellows have two things in common: a connection to Wales and an outstanding contribution to the world of learning. We have over 700 elected Fellows representing excellence in their fields and we harness their expertise to champion research, contribute expertise and promote learning and debate. Nominations for election to Fellowship in 2025 are now open. If you would like to be considered for nomination, please consider joining one of the following online sessions to find out more. These sessions will provide information on what the Fellowship is, what the route to nomination is and what is required of a nominee. Existing Fellows and LSW staff will deliver the sessions and there will be an opportunity to ask questions. Attending does not oblige you to put yourself forward as a nominee. Freedom is the foundation of science and innovation. 🌍 At the closing event of Science Year 2024, organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung), Michael Harms, Deputy Secretary General of DAAD, and BMBF State Secretary Stephan Ertner emphasized the importance of protecting academic freedom in their speeches. They presented the Fundamental Academic Values Award (FAVA) to three exceptional researchers whose work is dedicated to defending academic freedom, evaluating academic values in Europe, and examining the global challenges to academic independence and democracy.    DAAD and BMBF continue to collaborate in strengthening the global commitment to protecting these fundamental values. Today we’re announcing the launch of a collaborative international research project to explore the future of creative practice, responding to the challenges faced by the creative industries and wider society. Nine Fellows – including artists, researchers and those working in performing arts – will lead a major programme of research over the next year, supported by UKRI, Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Rothschild Foundation. Each Fellow will focus on a research theme which responds to the biggest challenges faced by the creative industries and wider society, and the change needed for the development and survival of the sector and future economic growth. Here are a few of the points we found most interesting and relevant from Andrew Rotherham's EduWonk blog about ESAs after Louisiana’s recent passage of an ESA that will roll out in early 2025. 🌟 ESA programs vary in their characteristics There is no one policy regarding ESA– making evaluating them difficult. 🆕 Direct payment programs are still relatively new in education Expect bumps in rollout, similar to quality issues in early-stage choice programs. 💰 ESAs are both becoming wildly popular and, as a result, wildly expensive A key metric to follow is the number of  people participating in ESAs who weren’t previously participating in public education. Our next medals and awards recipient in the spotlight is Professor Peter Hopkins FAcSS. 🎖️ Peter has been awarded the Back Award for sustained and outstanding contributions to policy development through research. His recent research focuses on Islamophobia, how it operates within society, and refugee experiences. Over the last two decades, Peter's work has been influential in shaping policy and practice. However, early in his career, the path to influence was not immediate. When asked what he wished he had known earlier in his career, he said: 🗣️ "One thing I wish I had learned earlier in my career is that rejection is a regular experience for academics. "This is the only way to ensure that we not only teach and research human rights, but also try to put them into practice ourselves, through trial and error" - Antoine Buyse This year, the Opening of the Academic Year 2024-2025 focuses on human rights and their significance for the university and the city of Utrecht. Keynotes were delivered by Prof. Antoine Buyse and mayor of Utrecht Sharon Dijksma. During the event, Joyce Browne, affiliated with UGlobe's signature project Global Health, led a thought-provoking panel discussion with three UU students on the project ‘Utrecht: City of Human and Right,’ a collaborative effort between True Heroes Films, UU and photographic artist Jan Banning. The project illustrates the relevance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in our daily lives in Utrecht. 🗣️ Key insights from our panelists: Huseyin Ali Kudret: ‘Every small action that you take to support refugees right, whether it is just correct misinformation or direct support for a refugee, it can make a big difference.
