In the NBR report "A New Great Game? Situating Africa in China’s Strategic Thinking," Nadège Rolland wrote: "Thanks to FOCAC, the scope of cooperation has greatly expanded over the past two decades, from dealing mainly with trade and investment issues (2000–2009), to actively developing people-to-people exchanges (2009–15), and eventually, since 2015, progressing to security cooperation as well as governance matters. These interactions, it is anticipated, will pave the way for the formation of a 'community of shared destiny” between China and Africa.'" https://bit.ly/3comcjm #FOCAC #Africa #China #ChinaandAfrica

The People's Republic of China (PRC) and all African States with the exception of the Kingdom of Eswatini belong to a formal forum known as the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) which has its ninth meeting holding in Beijing between September 4-6 2024. China has been Africa's largest trading partner since 2008 and its leading provider of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) since 2013. This report examines how China's foreign policy principles and initiatives, such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and FOCAC, empower African leaders to exercise agency. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dmx3PcyG #CDDReport #FOCAC2024 #ChinaAfricaRelations #BRIInAfrica

🌍 KSG Situation Report 🌍 Evaluating the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) #Africa #China #energy #green #mining #US #NATO Key Takeaways: The 2024 FOCAC Summit emphasised China’s expanding influence and financial commitments, with a $50.7 billion funding and a focus on economic cooperation, infrastructure, and job creation. China’s approach focuses on a strategic shift towards green development and industrial modernisation for high-tech industries, clean energy, and technical training, marking a departure from traditional investments and promoting diversified sustainable economic growth in Africa. The Summit underscored China’s dual focus on balancing security and economic interests, with Beijing committing military assistance and training, reflecting its aim to safeguard regional stability and counterbalance Western influence. China’s strengthened Sino-African partnership intensifies competition with global powers like the United States, Europe, Japan, and India, reshaping global governance to favour developing nations and boosting the geopolitical importance of the Global South. Despite China’s promises of mutual benefit and development, concerns over debt sustainability and financial dependency persist, highlighting the need for Africa to balance Chinese investments with diversified global partnerships.

This was a most interesting article to work on! Africa’s reality of self-determination requires economic transitions across its constituting states coupled with the right kind of foreign investment. This article provides insight into Africa’s trade investment relationship with China, and how beneficial it is to the AfCFTA.
There are numerous funds and programs originating from developed countries, focused on infrastructural development in Africa and none have been as sustained and widespread on the continent in modern history as the Belt and Road Initiative (“BRI”). The BRI, first announced in 2013 by the Chinese President Xi Xin Ping, is the term used to describe China’s external trade agenda to bring Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East closer together through the establishment of investment and trade networks. In this publication, Adekola Thompson(Associate, ALP NG & Co) analyses the operational structures through which both the BRI and the AfCFTA function, the results of their implementations so far, and the extent of their compatibility toward African trade development.
