Shreveport's Lakeside Gardens apartment complex has announced a $38.1 million renovation plan, which will add 22 new units and upgrade the 55-year-old property, ensuring continued affordable housing in the area. Louisiana leaders, including State Sen. Sam Jenkins and developer Jasmine Winston-Wilson, praised the investment, noting that without these renovations, the complex would have ceased to exist. Every project has a story, and Selkirk Mews is one I’ll always look back on with a mix of pride and perseverance. What started as a lock-up garage site—30 garages tucked away in a quiet Tottenham cul-de-sac—has been completely reimagined into something that feels purposeful and alive. It wasn’t all smooth sailing. The site had soil contamination, which turned a small challenge into a major operation. Instead of cutting corners, we took on the task head-on, decontaminating the entire area to ensure the safety of future residents. It was one of those moments where you’re reminded that development isn’t just about bricks and mortar; it’s about integrity and doing things the right way. From those foundations, we created something meaningful: two semi-detached three-bedroom houses and a block of two modern flats, all designed with neutral tones and contemporary finishes. These homes aren’t just practical—they’re spaces that bring life back to an underutilized area, offering comfort and community to the people who live there. For me, this project isn’t just about the structures we built—it’s about the transformation. Selkirk Mews is a testament to what’s possible when you see potential in overlooked spaces. It’s about turning challenges into opportunities and creating homes that resonate with the people and the community around them. Tottenham has its own unique energy, and being part of its growth is something I’ll never take for granted. Pollard Thomas Edwards mention their refurbishment of the pre-war Barnsbury Estate, which as far as I know has yet to happen, but not their proposed rebuilding of the post-ward Barnsbury Estate - at thee times the density of the existing pleasantly low-key and well-treed estate, including the loss of about 140 trees I think. Space and greenery are indeed vital to successful housing but, per head, the future inhabitants of the this estate are going to have very much less of them than the existing, and inevitably much less light too since the buildings will be on average about double the height and double the footprint of the existing. We need more housing but it should be provided in places where that is possible without detracting from the setting of the existing housing
