Lobbying for Access to Genetic Counselors Service Act! This is a fundamental piece of legislation!!! It will reimburse genetic counselors as physicians. There are about 3,000 Cell and Gene Therapies being developed, which is incredible. We need to think about diagnosing patients first, as not having patients diagnosed creates barriers to getting access to these therapies. To do that, we need more genetic counselors and more access to them. 1.Genetic Counselors do not get reimbursed adequately. They get paid $25 for a 45 minute session (not including all their work before and after) 2. There is no incentive for people wanting to go into the Genetic Counseling field. Thus there is a big shortage of Genetic Counselors in the Country. 3. Most physicians don't know how to refer patients to Genetic Counselors. The answer is clear why there is a Diagnostic Odyssey. PERSONALIZED CARE FOR GENETIC DISEASES IN CHILDREN Many genetic disorders now have better outlooks, thanks to scientific advances and pharmaceutical companies paying more attention to rare and genetic diseases. Treatments for genetic disorders are continually improving and expanding. Tests can sometimes even reveal which drugs will be most effective for a patient. If a treatment is not yet available, it may become available in the near future. By 2025, the FDA may approve 10 to 20 new gene and cell therapies yearly.
