According to CDP, In 2022, almost 80MM properties in the U.S, or 1 in 6 people, were at risk of wildfire. By 2052, half of the people at risk of #wildfire will live in the South. As of Aug. 13 2024, Canada has seen 4,626 fires, which have burned 8.9MM acres of land.  The US #NationalInteragencyFireCenter statistics show that as of Aug. 15, 2024, 29,917 fires this year have burned more than 5.2MM acres. Which is why these two developments have caught my eye (and it’s a small window to the research and innovations in the space): Number 1: Vancouver-based tech firm #SenseNet #AI-enabled system warns #firefighters when it detects a pattern indicative of ignition and allows for a response within minutes instead of an hour or more when using traditional visual detection. The system involves cameras and scores of #airsensors scattered among trees and other high points, collecting data that is fed into an #AI system for analysis. Number 2: Students Richard Alexandre, Karina Gunadi, Blake Goodwyn and Tanghao Yu won the UK #JamesDysonAward. A pineconed device which alerts vulnerable communities to developing #wildfires. A group of students developed #Pyri - a #biodegradable detector made of wax and charcoal which sends radio signals to vulnerable communities. The device’s shell melts when fire approaches, releasing a solution which activates the electronic parts within, sending a signal to nearby communities. Wonderful and meaningful examples that can aid wildfire prevention before it takes its devastating toll. #innovation #wildfires #climate #designwithpurpose #AI #pyri #sensenet
