Our chief guest emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to build resilient borders and economies in the fight against smuggling and counterfeiting. Talks kicked off today with Brett O'Riley speaking on 'New Zealand's Manufacturing Sector: A Call to Action.' When 60% of NZ's exports come out of manufacturing, it's time for more emphasis in the news and in funding for the manufacturing sector. It's always good to hear from folks who've been around the block. Brett shared that this is (hope I've got this right!) the worst recession NZ has faced since the 1990s, which had a similar set of political decisions that preceded it. ✳ NZ also has a productivity problem, and we are reluctant adopters of new technology. ✳ NZ is the second most difficult country in the OECD in which to make foreign direct investment. For all that - there's a fantastic buzz at EMEX 2024! The people that power NZ are all there in one room together, celebrating ingenuity and innovation, getting inspired, connecting. Have you ever considered how the ‘chicken and egg’ analogy might apply to your own industry? At icRS 2024, it’s a common theme. It may seem like an unusual slide, but this ‘chicken and egg’ paradox is something I’ve seen and heard about frequently at icRS 2024. In many industries, especially in resource sustainability, we face this cycle: one factor can’t progress without the other—but they’re both necessary for real change. In my presentation, I shared how this paradox applies to the recycling of rigid polyurethane foams and explored potential solutions to break this cycle. With each discussion here, I’m more convinced that there are ways forward, and it’s inspiring to see so many minds committed to finding them.
