Thank you Climate Council and RenewEconomy for keeping the spotlight on our need for urgent action in Australia👏🏼💚 For those in industry using the argument that Queensland or Australia is responsible for a small amount of emissions and therefore should play a small part in delivering the solutions, I cannot agree. Equally, this line of argument is a tit for tat justification on our action and misses the enormous economic opportunities of action. I believe in making a positive impact in our world, even if you have had little to do with creating the problem (and we haven’t), because we all care about the systems outside of ourselves: our family, community, and planet. Australia and Queensland in particular have one of the worst global emissions per capita rates, so we need to do our part. We are also fuelling the emissions of many other countries through exports so we are not innocent within the blame game of global warming. A just transition means getting the process and outcomes right to deliver energy justice while also delivering it at pace to deliver climate and environmental justice. Australia has been ranked one of the world’s worst climate wreckers by the UN's 2024 Sustainable Development Report. Australia received one of the lowest scores for ‘climate action’ – ranking fourth-last out of the 168 countries that were scored in the report. This is largely due to us being a major fossil fuel exporter. This shocking result underscores the urgent need to slash climate pollution. As the sunniest and one of the windiest countries in the world, we have everything we need to power past coal and gas and rocket up the rankings as a clean energy superpower.

From a grass roots level we can drive change through responsible choices and disrupt the consumer balance via shifting demand. Collectively transforming the market by understanding the impacts of our consumption, and choosing an alternative before a common convenient. It will be gritty, but opting out is no longer an option. Yes, we can! Some good news for the weekend: EU greenhouse gas emissions fell 8% last year, as member states continue to close down coal-fired power plants and make more electricity from sun and wind. The steep drop in planet-heating pollution in 2023 is close to the fall recorded in Europe at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions grounded planes and shuttered factories. The European Environment Agency report found the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions were now 37% below their levels in 1990. The findings come as scientists say that the climate crisis acted to strengthen the furious downpours that inundated southern and eastern Spain on Tuesday, killing more than 150 people. “The impact of climate change is accelerating,” said the EEA’s executive director, Leena Ylä-Mononen. “This leaves us no choice but to strengthen our resilience to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” The European Commission, which released a separate progress report on Tuesday, described the reduction as “very encouraging”. It said it “reinforced confidence” in the EU’s ability to meet its target of cutting emissions 55% by 2030. But the EEA found there was still a gap to close. Current policies from member states are expected to reduce emissions by 43% by 2030 from their 1990 levels. Planned measures that have not yet been rolled out would bring this up to 49% – still leaving a gap of 6 percentage points. “The significant emissions reductions in 2023 mark a major step towards the overall 2030 climate target,” the authors wrote. But “an acceleration of efforts will be needed”, they added. Only 40 of the world’s 100 largest private firms have set net-zero carbon emissions targets to fight climate change.   But for the world to meet the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius, all companies need to reduce their planet-heating emissions, the report by the group Net Zero Tracker noted.   The report compared 200 of the world’s largest public and private companies based on their reported emissions reduction strategies and net-zero targets.   Carbon credits allow businesses to offset their emissions by directing money toward a project that reduces or avoids emissions, such as protecting forests, but critics say they allow companies to keep polluting.   This content is jointly prepared by ripple2wave and ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd.
