In order to get true ownership it begins with clarity on roles and responsibilities but it sure doesn't end there. . . When people REALLY own safety it becomes part of who they are. It doesn't happen overnight. Like any habit it takes discipline and time and accountability (for ensuring we are taking care of ourselves and one another). . . Organizations have an opportunity to empower their employees to contribute to not just the daily tasks of risk reduction but also the more strategic decisions that impact the greater good (their co-workers). It's not easy for leaders to give up the reins like this but when they do (and when they also provide resources and back the team), the sky is the limit on risk reduction and engagement (which also results in overall business efficiency/effectiveness).
