Consequently, they are usually the products of various technological and engineering disciplines including aerodynamics, air propulsion, avionics, materials science, structural analysis and manufacturing. The interaction between these technologies is known as aerospace engineering. Because of the complexity and number of disciplines involved, aerospace engineering is carried out by teams of engineers, each having their own specialized area of expertise.The origin of aerospace engineering can be traced back to the aviation pioneers around the late 19th to early 20th centuries, although the work of Sir George Cayley dates from the last decade of the 18th to the mid-19th century. One of the most important people in the history of aeronautics[8] and a pioneer in aeronautical engineering,[9] Cayley is credited as the first person to separate the forces of lift and drag, which affect any atmospheric flight vehicle.[10] Early knowledge of aeronautical engineering was largely empirical, with some concepts and skills imported from other branches of engineering. Some key elements, like fluid dynamics, were understood by 18th-century scientists. In December 1903, the Wright Brothers performed the first sustained, controlled flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft, lasting 12 seconds. The 1910s saw the development of aeronautical engineering through the design of World War I military aircraft. World War I edit In 1914, Robert Goddard was granted two U.S. patents for rockets using solid fuel, liquid fuel, multiple propellant charges, and multi-stage designs. This would set the stage for future applications in multi-stage propulsion systems for outer space. On March 3, 1915, the U.S. Congress established the first aeronautical research administration, known then as the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, or NACA. It was the first government-sponsored organization to support aviation research.[15] Though intended as an advisory board upon inception, the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory became its first sponsored research and testing facility in 1920

Wonderful piece by Dr Edward Smith is the Director of Penn State's Rotorcraft Centers of Excellence (RCOE). In 1996, a Penn State team was competitively awarded one of the three Rotorcraft Centers of Excellence (RCOE) by the newly formed National Rotorcraft Technology Center (NRTC). Since that time, Penn State research and graduate student enrollment has grown 10 fold, having been competitively awarded RCOE and VLRCOE (Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence) Cooperative agreements from the NRTC in 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. Penn State also receives strong support from the US Office of Naval Research (ONR), NAVAIR, US Army Research Laboratory, USAF Agility Prime, Army TDD, Army SED, NASA (Ames, Glenn and Langley Research Centers), and numerous industry partners throughout the vertical flight community. Approximately 65 full-time graduate students (50% PhD, 50% MS, and 80% US Citizens or Permanent Residents) working on $8M per year (in 2023) in projects related to dynamics, aerodynamics, acoustics, flight control and simulation, icing, HUMS, and advanced design of rotary-wing vehicles. It’s been nearly 75 years since the early flights of the Bell XV-3. The development and systematic maturation of the tiltrotor aircraft represents one of the pinnacle achievements of the aerospace engineering community. 3-2-1 Euler Angles. When discussing the attitude of aircraft flying in the earth's atmosphere, the standard choice in aerospace engineering is to use the 3-2-1 Euler angles and label them, in order, ψ, θ, ϕ. They are called yaw angle, pitch angle, and roll angle, respectively

Today was a really cool day in Dr. Abrar.H Baluch’s AE228 (Intro. to AE Struct. & Mat.) class. We learned about special materials (composites), and I'm so excited to tell you all about it! Composites are like super-strong materials. They're made by mixing different stuff together. In our class, Dr. Abrar.H Baluch showed us how combining carbon/glass fibers with epoxy makes this super-strong material called a composite. Composites are really important in making airplanes. Can you believe they make up 50-70% of an airplane's weight? That's a lot! These materials help keep the planes safe and work really well. Seeing these materials up close was so cool! They've changed the way we make airplanes. Now they're lighter, stronger, and use less fuel. I want to give a big thanks to Dr. Abrar.H Baluch for teaching us about these amazing materials. I can't wait to use what I've learned in future projects and be a part of the aerospace engineering world. #AerospaceEngineering #Composites #Airplanes
