Just wrapped up the week at a conference--gratitude post on that coming soon. But I wanted to get something out into the universe while it was still super fresh in my mind. An "Ah Ha" moment that really crystalized for me over the last couple days. These days there's lots of great tech out there to help nonprofits. We can use tech to do incredible things, from predicting donor behavior (let me show you how 😎 ) to crafting great donor journeys, managing relationships in more authentic ways, etc. However none of that is worth a hill of beans unless we find ways for fundraisers to operationalize it. Case in point--an insane percentage of orgs surveyed (I forget the exact number, maybe Adam Johns can help me remember) fail to send thank you emails on digital gifts. WHAT?!?! This is literally a toggle switch on most platforms. It is a problem that should not exist. Tech can take one only so far, and then the fundraiser must take the final step---but sometimes they don't. It tells me that when we, as technologists, believe we have solved a problem for our end user, we need to keep in mind that the audience we serve is often overworked, a bit frazzled, and focused on simply getting through the latest campaign. They often don't have bandwidth to deal with change management or process improvement. We won't always be able to take 100% of the lift off the org's plate, but the more we can operationalize our solution and make it automatic, the better the outcome will be for all involved. Fundraising is really hard. We're working to make it easier. What processes do you wish you could automate so you could focus on deeper more authentic relationships, and how can we as tech companies make the solution so easy you don't even need to think about it? I'm allergic to the word "transformation". I hear it and as my kids say, it give me the "ick". Yes, some of this is remnants of teenage neuroticism from when my dad was on a spiritial kick. But as a passenger to his personal transformation, I very much felt like I was being forced to participate in something I DIDN'T want to do. My feelings, concerns, questions weren't answered. His transformation affected ME. As a leader in the nonprofit space looking for ways to "10x" what your team can do with no extra overhead, all those tech companies are selling some pretty sweet "transformation" ideas. Who doesn't want: - 30% more donations - $$$ saved on processing fees - Integrated email/donations/CRM But often in transformation we forget the ultimate passenger to your orgs transformation - your team. What I love about Tim Lockie and The Human Stack is that he is humans first. He is a totally techie (I am not....) but we are able to talk together about my transformation icks because he is curious on how humans can be served by tech and not the other way around. It's still early. I'm learning something new every day. My countless failures (and a few successes) in the private sector has helped so much as we get ready to scale our impact. 💔 She’s pouring everything into her mission, but something’s missing. 💔 I recently spoke with a non-profit leader who has poured her heart and soul into her work. She’s already making an impact. A small group of people believes in what she’s doing so deeply that they go out of their way—at their own expense—to help her carry out the mission. Her content is being shared by people with massive followings, reaching a huge audience. But despite all this, she’s stuck and confused. “Why don’t people get it?” she asked me. She believes she’s got the recipe for success— ✔️ She’s creative. ✔️ She’s great at bringing talented people together. ✔️ She’s a decent storyteller. ✔️ And she has a heart so big it’s impossible not to root for her. Yet, the movement she envisions just isn’t happening. What she can’t see is how to connect the dots. Her mission is incredible, but without a clear story—a narrative that inspires people to not just care but to act—it’s getting lost in the noise. She needs a system that doesn’t just tell her story but makes people feel it. A way to create a narrative so emotionally powerful that people can’t help but get involved. A process to invite people into her cause and empower advocates who will rally others. It’s not about working harder. It’s about working smarter. Missions vs. Movements This is the turning point every non-profit faces. A mission is vital, but a mission alone won’t rally a crowd. To create lasting impact, you need a Movement. A mission is the what—the goal or purpose that drives your work. It’s focused on the actions your organization takes to create change. A movement, on the other hand, is the why and how—it’s the emotional connection that inspires people to join your cause and take action alongside you. A mission informs, but a movement unites. A mission can stand on its own, but a movement brings people together, turning supporters into advocates and donors into lifelong partners. While a mission tells people what you do, a movement invites them to be part of something bigger than themselves. Movements: -Make your mission clear and emotionally compelling. -Build relationships that deepen donor trust and loyalty. -Turn donors into advocates who spread the message for you. What About You?
