Together, we are developing the CUE device—a simple, non-invasive technology designed with and for people with Parkinson’s—to improve their quality of life. Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, are characterized by the progressive loss of structure or function of neurons. Early diagnosis is crucial for managing these conditions, but it remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of these disorders. Enter acoustic biomarkers - unique sound patterns that are indicative of specific physiological or pathological states. Recent studies suggest that changes in speech and voice characteristics could serve as potential biomarkers for neurodegenerative disorders. For instance, subtle changes in speech articulation, voice pitch, or speech rate, often imperceptible to the human ear, could indicate the onset of a neurodegenerative disorder. By leveraging advanced signal processing and machine learning techniques, we can detect these minute changes, potentially leading to early diagnosis. The promise of acoustic biomarkers is immense. They offer a non-invasive, cost-effective, and scalable method for early detection of neurodegenerative disorders. However, much work remains to be done. We need more research to validate these markers and develop reliable diagnostic tools. I’m excited about the potential impact of this research on millions of lives worldwide.
