If the Trump team wants to stop the expansion of AQ and ISIS they need to reset our policy towards Afghanistan The Taliban and Haqqani terrorists are running the global terrorism training center 1. Choose a special envoy trusted by Afghans 2. Get the world to support a political opposition 3. Stop funding to Afghanistan that helps the terror regime 4. Pakistan must be forced to stop supporting terrorist organizations 5. If the political opposition unifies and builds a martial force that works under civilian control—-support them militarily 6. Sanctions, no fly lists, arrests, removal of any terrorist in Afghanistan any allies can grab 7. Don’t support martial groups separately. Afghans don’t need more warlords or another civil war. Force them to unify and report to an inclusive political body—that is not full of warlord children or failed senior leaders
Jason Howk, Director of Global Friends of Afghanistan, GFA, is the first of a series of guests discussing how the incoming Trump administration should approach Afghanistan. Find his incisive suggestions in Ep. 72 of The Afghanistan Project Podcast here: https://lnkd.in/gCydreFm

📢 New week, new podcast! In this week’s episode, Mark Leonard welcomes senior policy fellow Hugh Lovatt, director of ECFR’s Middle East and North Africa programme Julien Barnes-Dacey, and research director and director of ECFR’s new US programme Jeremy Shapiro. Together, they discuss the current situation in Gaza and how the war could create the opportunity for a “grand bargain” which could unblock the previously stuck status quo and solve the decades-long Arab-Israeli conflict. How likely is it that there will be a ceasefire in time for Ramadan? How are US and European governments responding to the war? And what are the odds that we could end up with a grand bargain that results in a two-state solution? https://lnkd.in/dTTr74vM
