The Gent Waste Brick has received two Henry van de Velde Awards in the Design Research and Environment categories. The Belgium-based awards showcase designers, products and projects that have a positive impact on society, the environment and the economy. Designed in collaboration with Sogent, Design Museum Gent, BC materials and Local Works Studio Limited, the bricks have been produced and the first set laid for the façade of the new wing of the Design Museum Gent, currently under construction. Using local-waste streams, the bricks are pressed rather than fired and use one third the Co2 of a traditional brick. The double win recognises the collective achievement of the design and development team to create a low-carbon alternative to clay fired bricks. Voting is now open for the gold and public awards. Transforming Acoustic Comfort: The Magic of ETFE in Architecture Imagine you're sitting in a bustling restaurant, yet you can hear your companion without raising your voice. That's the magic of ETFE! 🌿🍽️ Hard materials like concrete and glass amplify noise, leading to the Lombard effect where everyone talks louder to be heard. As we celebrate World Listening Day 2024, let's explore how ETFE is transforming our auditory experiences in architecture. Our Research & Development team collaborates with top universities to compare ETFE's acoustic performance against other materials. The results? ETFE reduces noise levels significantly, making it ideal for both new constructions and renovations. ETFE's Acoustic Superpowers: • 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝟴-𝟭𝟬 𝗱𝗕 in reverberant situations compared to glass, making large spaces feel more intimate. • 𝗖𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟱𝟬% compared to traditional glass roofs. • 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗯𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱, especially low frequencies, confirmed by lab tests. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: A case study by KU Leuven in a high school in Oldenburg, Germany, demonstrated ETFE's impact on reverberation time. >>>Hear the difference, watch the video.<<< #VectorFoiltec #Texlon #ETFE #WorldListeningDay2024 #AcousticArchitecture #InnovationInBuilding #ETFEvsGlass

I submitted a short article to Type.ie about beauty in architecture and the aesthetic implications of retaining buildings old and new due to embodied carbon concerns, along with what the New European Bauhaus has to say about incorporating beauty into sustainable solutions in the built environment. Check it out!
“Since the advent of modernism, beauty has often been side-lined as an aspiration in architectural design, viewed with suspicion as a reactionary bourgeois value, or a relic of the clash of historical styles of the nineteenth century.” Read ‘The New European Bauhaus: beauty as climate action’ by Stephen Wall – part of the Future Reference article series. https://lnkd.in/eEWukHBS Sign up to the dogma&opinion newsletter for more at type.ie. We are delighted to announce that Aaltosiilo Ry has officially joined the NEBA: New European Bauhaus Initiative as partner – one of the six in Finland and the only one in northern part of the country as of December 2024. The New European Bauhaus, launched by the European Commission, envisions a future where sustainability, inclusivity, and aesthetics come together to inspire innovative solutions for our built environment. Joining this vibrant network allows Aaltosiilo Ry to collaborate with like-minded organisations and strengthens our commitment to ensure the preservation of Alvar and Aino Aalto’s woodchip silo in Oulu and its transformation into a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, sustainability, and cultural engagement. Central to the AaltoSiilo project is the use of art to reinvent industrial cultural heritage and the introduction by Skene Catling de la Peña and Factum Foundation of a new way of reusing reclaimed concrete demolition ‘waste’ to reduce carbon emissions during the restoration project of the Silo. The Aaltosiilo is a core legacy project for Oulu, European City of Culture, 2026 and was recently chosen by the European Commission as an example of excellence in architecture as part of the Living Spaces peer-learning programme. The first renovation phase of the Silo, overseen by LTM Rakennus Oy and Snowhow Oy, started in November 2024 and is nearing completion, with significant milestones achieved over the past weeks. The aim is to repurpose the historical site while preserving its architectural heritage. The metal hoppers are being disassembled and removed in collaboration with VP Purkku Oy, and the ground floor's wood structures have been dismantled. We would like to thank Hauru Oy for their help in the waste management, especially in handling the disposal of hazardous and toxic materials. We look forward to participating in this journey of innovation and sharing our ideas and projects with the NEB community.

Metaphorical Narratives: Unraveling the Theory of Architectural Assemblage In 1985, Hans Hollein unveiled an installation at the Künstlerhaus in Vienna, showcasing a unique blend of historical and contemporary architectural elements. This assemblage, part of the 'Traum und Wirklichkeit, Wien 1870-1930' exhibition, recontextualized fragments to create a 'fragmentary whole.' Notably, the golden female figure representing Gustav Klimt's 'Medicine' was replaced with Justice from the Old Bailey, symbolizing themes of power and balance. Similarly, the architectural form from Karl-Marx-Hof was replaced with Spittelau Viaducts Housing by Zaha Hadid Architects, reflecting Vienna's embrace of contemporary design while honoring its historical roots. Hollein's installation delves into the metaphorical implications of architectural assemblage, exploring the intersection of architecture, history, and culture. Assemblage theory posits that disparate fragments can create new narratives, reflecting the complexity of human experience. Architectural assemblage embodies architectural eclecticism, where diverse elements form a cohesive whole. Each fragment carries its own narrative, inviting viewers to engage with the interplay between past and present. Metaphorically, assemblage reflects the human experience, where individual influences converge to shape collective narratives. Like fragments, these influences create the tapestry of human existence. Assembling elements mirrors historical interpretation, challenging conventional narratives. Assemblage becomes a metaphor for the fluidity of history, highlighting the contingent nature of truths. Hollein's installation invites viewers to explore the complexities of architecture, history, and identity, challenging established narratives and embracing the past and present. In conclusion, Hollein's installation is a testament to the metaphorical potential of architectural assemblage, inviting viewers to engage with the rich tapestry of human experience and history. #HansHollein #ArchitecturalAssemblage #ViennaInstallation #HistoricalNarratives #ContemporaryDesign #ZahaHadid #MetaphoricalArchitecture #HumanExperience #HistoryInterpretation #FluidityOfHistory #ArchitecturalComplexity

Use your senses. I believe that architecture has the power to evoke emotions or amazement, to soothe or foster connection. Space can suggest various activities with different reactions. This reverberating relationship underscores the lasting effect that the environment around us has in different circumstances. Whether at home, at work, or at school, we are almost always within architectural spaces. I'd like to point out an exhibition that I've read a lot about and hope to visit soon: Aware, an exhibition organized by the Danish Architecture Center and designed by 3XN GXN, showcases fundamental concepts of space: not just bricks, concrete, or steel, but relationships between bodies and space, between spatial atmospheres and human emotions. The exhibition encourages exploration and reflection on your experience of space, engaging your senses and delving into the behavioral principles of architecture and their transformative potential. Organizers explain that from the moment you enter the exhibition, you will be immersed in six large installations designed to awaken your senses, and the experience is enriched by a sound universe created by the Mesmer trio and the lighting design of Jesper Kongshaug. 🙌 What’s your take? # 309 EVENTS, Denmark 👉 More content on our website and subscribe to the weekly newsletter; the link to the featured news is in the first comment below. 🎯 If you want to learn more about our transformative approach to generating growth (yes, what we call innovation marketing!), feel free to write us privately.
