The beneficial bond between older adults and pets – shared from the CarePatrol blog: Mental Health Benefits: Pets can help older adults who live with mental health conditions. In a study from 2006, researchers divided seniors in retirement communities into three groups: 48 older adults were given a canary, 43 older adults were given a plant, and 53 adults were given nothing. Those who received the canary said they had a higher quality of life than the other two groups. A similar study showed dog-assisted therapy may be beneficial for some residents of aged care facilities with dementia as dog-assisted intervention also showed significant improvements on a measure of quality of life and depression scores. Moreover, older adults who owned a pet were 36% less likely than non-pet owners to report loneliness.

Mental health affects many people – with one in five Australians experiencing a mental disorder in the past 12 months (AIHW, 2022). Older people are particularly vulnerable to poor mental health for many reasons, such as illness, frailty and loss of independence, grief and loss, financial stress, changing living arrangements and increasing social isolation. At Silverchain, we have developed an innovative model of care to address the mental health needs of our clients. This The Brookings Institution study caught my eye. It underscores the critical need for #mentalhealthsupport. The report identifies key barriers including: • financial constraints, • underinsurance, • access, and • societal stigma These barriers disproportionately affect the mental well-being of our elders. However, my concern extends beyond our parents, to our children, and friends. The data is compelling and highlights an urgent call to action to improve mental health support systems. I'm hopeful awareness and understanding will lead to healthy discussions to help foster supportive communities. #calltoaction

Crushing Reality: Shocking Depression Rates Among Caregivers Caregiving isn't just exhausting; it's a one-way ticket to depression for many. A 2022 study exposes the harsh truth: caring for loved ones takes a devastating toll on mental health. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, a staggering 20% of family caregivers are plunged into depression—twice the rate of the general population. But here's the real gut punch: among those shouldering the burden of dementia care, a jaw-dropping 60% battle depression from the get-go. Fast forward five years, and the nightmare persists: 60% still grapple with the darkness, while 32% see their symptoms worsen. It's a chilling wake-up call to the harsh realities of caregiving. @GetInTheBoatBook #CaregiverDepression #MentalHealthCrisis #DementiaCare #CaregiverBurden #ShockingStats #2022Study #CaregivingStruggles #HiddenToll https://lnkd.in/gjKbih7u

If you're like me, your first reaction to the Surgeon General's advisory on parental stress may have been "well, duh!" However, I encourage everyone to read it. The advisory delves into the stressors affecting parents and caregivers' mental health and emphasizes the critical need for better support for families. It also offers actionable guidance on addressing these challenges. One key recommendation is for employers to provide stress management training for managers. This includes educating them on how to recognize signs of stress and mental health issues among parents and caregivers. Implementing such initiatives can significantly contribute to a healthier and more supportive work environment for all. I urge everyone to take the time to read the Surgeon General's advisory and reflect on how we can contribute to a more supportive environment for parents and caregivers. Whether you are an employer, a colleague, or a friend, we all have a role to play in addressing this pressing issue.

Registration is now open for the next webinar! Improvement of Mental Health Symptoms Following a 6-week Virtual Support Group Program for Bereaved Parents Presented by Kiley Hanish, OTD, PMH-C and Betsy Winter, BA Thursday, October 10, 2024 2PM - 3PM CST Cost: Members: $25 Non-Members: $35 Session Description: After experiencing pregnancy or infant loss, bereaved birthing parents experience significantly higher levels of depression and are more likely to be diagnosed with other mental health conditions than those who give birth to infants who survive through the first year of age. Gold (2008) reports that perinatal loss resulted in a 4 times greater chance of screening positively for depression and a 7 times higher risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Moreover, many parents who experience pregnancy or infant loss are not screened or diagnosed and therefore do not receive treatment. RTZ HOPE created a 6-week, curriculum-based virtual support program for bereaved parents. Mental health assessments (PHQ-9 and GAD-7) were administered pre- and post-attendance of the 6-week virtual support group program, and this presentation reports on the effectiveness of these virtual support groups in reducing depression and anxiety post-perinatal loss.
