🔍 Understanding Process Technology in Operations Management Process technologies are the machines, equipment, or devices that help operations create or deliver products and services. They can be direct or indirect, with the latter facilitating the direct creation of products and services. 🎯 Key Questions for Operations Managers Operations managers need not know the technical details of all technologies, but they should be able to answer four key questions: What does it do? How does it do it? What advantages does it give? What constraints does it impose? 🔄 Classifying Process Technologies Process technologies can be classified according to the transformed resources they process material-processing technologies, information-processing technologies, and customer-processing technologies. Some technologies, called integrating technologies, process more than one type of resource. 🔬 Understanding Implications for Operations An important element in understanding process technologies is understanding their implications for the operations where they will be used. 📐 Appropriateness of Technologies All technologies should be appropriate for the activities they undertake. This means ensuring that the degree of automation, the scale or scalability, and the degree of coupling or connectivity of the technology fit the volume and variety characteristics of the operation. 📊 Evaluating Technologies All technologies should be evaluated by assessing their impact on the operation’s performance objectives (quality, speed, dependability, flexibility, and cost). They should also be evaluated financially, often using common evaluation approaches such as net present value (NPV). 🔧 Implementing Process Technology Implementing process technology means organizing all the activities involved in making the technology work as intended. The resource and process ‘distance’ implied by the technology implementation will indicate the degree of difficulty. 👥 Customer Acceptability and Adjustment Costs Customer acceptability may be a barrier to implementation in customer processing technologies. Some common supplier selection criteria includes: 👉Quality and safety of Products 👉Value for Money (#Price_competitiveness) 👉Reliability and Service 👉Flexibility and Adaptability 👉Cross Functional Team Involvement Today I'm writing down this post on Selecting the right #supplier. Choosing a correct supplier is organisational success in a competitive landscape, impacting overall operations and #minimizing_risk Any organization shall have a documented supplier selection #process. The selection process shall include: a) an assessment of the selected supplier's risk to product conformity and uninterrupted supply of the organization's product to their customers. b) Relevant quality and delivery performance. c) An evaluation of the supplier's quality management system. d) multidisciplinary decision making; and e) An assessment of software development capabilities, if applicable.
