In many ways, I don't even recognize myself. I've changed so much in one year. Here are the things I've learned after one year as a law firm owner: 1. The most important resource I have is my network. They've shown up for me in ways I couldn't have foreseen before launch. 2. Technology has saved my sanity. Having a solid tech stack is key. I have so much automated, triggered, templated, and tasked that much of my practice is on auto-pilot. I've never had the luxury of so much tech and I LOVE IT! 3. The clients will come. My biggest fear before launch was around having enough work to support my practice. Between referrals, implementing solid marketing practices, and investing in marketing support, the work is coming. 4. Be a sponge. Have the humility to listen more than you talk. I learn from friends, from listening to podcasts, by engaging the right vendors, and working closely with clients to ease the process. 5. Comparisons aren't fair. Set aside the competitive instincts. You can't compare your year one to another firm's year 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 or beyond. I'm unique. My firm is unique. My path is my own. It's evolving and comparisons don't help prioritize my goals. Congratulations to Les Viner on his appointment announced this morning as a Gildan director. As I wrote here a few months ago, Les is in my Hall of Fame of Managing Partners. In a business law firm, you want a CEO or MP who is respected at the highest levels of business. Herb Solway was that in spades at Goodmans LLP. Mitch Frazer is that at Mintz. That doesn’t mean getting on a client board ( not a good idea pre retirement) or a friend’s board but on a board dealing with real challenges. In real business, the CEO is not an inside person. They are key to bringing in business, raising the firm’s profile in the business community and having multiple roles in the broader community ( education, health, special initiatives, personal and firm charity, speaking). They have a broad perspective and relationships that benefit the firm. Look at the firms you know. Look at your firm. Is your MP or CEO a leader in the broader business world, multiple levels in the community and in the firm? Would a big cap company with a need for a strong thinker on business, law, ethics, and a stellar public profile look to your MP or CEO. How much business have they generated from new clients or contested clients in the last two years? If they don’t have these attributes why does your firm settle for less?

This is a massive win for ALL the legal innovation rockstars! ** Not only does this shatter the stereotype, but it proves that the expertise of non-dealmaking professionals is essential for innovation to thrive! For me, these are folks who don't just follow precedents, they CREATE unimaginable opportunities and carve unique paths with their knowledge and out-of-the-box thinking. Here's hoping more firms see the value and follow suit! This post was more emotional for me that I expected. Major milestones are worth celebrating and they are much more fun to celebrate with others! Not only are we celebrating FFA’s 10 year anniversary this week, but we also crossed our first $1 Billion in assets that we steward for our clients - a figure I never dreamed was possible. The honest backstory is for many years, I fought against the idea of scaling a business. I intentionally avoided things that grew enterprise, and chose to stay focused on building my client practice. I got so disenchanted running a firm that I almost sold it (twice!) at a significant discount, just to avoid having to build it. I didn’t want to work that hard. As a result, we grew almost accidentally, in spite of me. Only in the last 4-5 years have I welcomed any growth. Looking back now, it’s hard to believe how short sighted I was. I can’t imagine my life having not gotten to where we are today at Fiduciary Financial Advisors, an inc. 5000 company. And frankly we are just getting started. (The next Billion is already underway and shouldn’t take long.) Thanks to a handful of the less obvious folks along the way. Yes for sure, everyone in the firm’s post below. But also specifically Emily VerWys, Stephanie Hino, Lucy Shair Foundation for Women in Finance (RIP L), Jonathan Koop, Greg Skidmore, Kevin Cusack, Joe Horlings (the first person to ask me meaningfully what I was going to do for the rest of my career), Drew Wilson, Stephen Yarmesch, and Worklab by Custer.
