It was a pleasure watching Databricks's own Dael Williamson present to 1,200 Haleon employees at their annual R&D LEAP conference this week! Key takeaways for me: 1. Create AI systems that leverage your [incredibly valuable] Enterprise data so you can “mine the intangibles” and differentiate in the market 2. Open Source is the best way to do this while avoiding vendor lock-in and maintaining governance & control 3. Data closest to the business users (OKRs, KPIs, targets) is the most proprietary, and that’s where the most disruption is taking place. “Generative BI” is the new frontier. 𝗜 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗯 So there I was, dressed to impress, ready to launch into what was sure to be a legendary night out. I strut up to the door, confidence at full volume—until the bouncer hits me with that look. You know the one. The look that says, “I’m about to ruin your evening, and I’m going to enjoy it.” He gives me the once-over, then leans in with a deadpan, “Sorry, not on the list.” I laughed it off, thinking, Oh, he’s just messing with me. So I try the charm card—didn’t work. Tried the “I know people” name-drop—still nothing. I even went with, “Come on, my friends are already in there!” He just shrugs, like, “Yeah, and they’ll be having a great time…without you.” At this point, I’m pulling out all the stops, short of offering my firstborn or breaking into a choreographed dance number. But no dice—the guy was a fortress of “No.” Funny enough, it’s a lot like trying to get data access at work. Just swap the bouncer for an endless permissions maze, and suddenly you’re going through the same moves: Charm? Nope. I know people? Sorry, not enough. By the time you finally get through all the hoops (if you do), the night’s over—or in my case, the project’s finished. Databricks Summit in San Francisco was an incredibly exciting experience. The energy and enthusiasm from like-minded professionals, all passionate about data and innovation, was truly inspiring Wednesday is shaping up to be the big day for Databricks news. CEO Ali Ghodsi will take the stage to deliver his keynote address starting at 8:30 a.m. PT. Unity Catalog is currently not open source, there is speculation that the company may change that to address concerns over lock in, in addition how Databricks builds products around Iceberg will be crucial, because it will have to court the open-source users who have been drawn to the product. Practitioners say the purchase of Tabular gives it a valuable strategic asset to abstract and connect to several data-management platforms and services.
