Cars' environmental impact isn't just what comes out of the tailpipe. Ultimately we need to eliminate all embedded emissions. A good first step is to measure and monitor those impacts in a uniform manner across Europe.
Joint call for an EU #vehicle #eco-score to support the industrial transition As the new #European #Commission takes office, we (Transport & Environment (T&E)) join forces with BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation Deutsche Umwelthilfe and Institut Mobilités en Transition to call the EU Commission to adopt an #harmonised EU-wide vehicle eco-score. By focusing on the #carbon #footprint of key components (batteries, steel, aluminum) and energy efficiency, the eco-score rewards cars with lower environmental impact. This is key to support the #transition of the #automotive #industry to cleaner #materials and production. Why now❓ With the EU Commission committed to a #Clean #Industrial #Deal to complement the Green Deal, it should act and include the eco-score in their work program. Benefits of the eco-score❓ ⚡ Speed & simplicity: Easy implementation across the EU 🏛️ Single market: Prevents fragmented national approaches (cf France’s eco-score) 📊 Consumer info: Informs consumer decisions, eg via the car labelling 💶 Fiscal policy integration: Integrate into national fiscal policies 🏭 Industrial policy: Rewards 'Made in EU’ cars made with lower carbon materials and clean energy. The agreement to pursue zero emissions for Europe’s new cars and vans by 2035 backed up by strong charging infrastructure and development of alternatives such as rail network, and the sustainable batteries regulation, has set a clear direction and an unequivocal target for sustainable transport measures. However, in order to make the Green transition a reality, and bring its benefits to people, the planet and business, it is vital that we act now. Making the transition to e-mobility must be a priority, not simply to deliver environmental sustainability but also to reinforce the EU’s industrial strength, security and competitiveness. We are at a pivotal moment and the world cannot afford for electrification to fail. The EU 2035 target for 100% zero-emission new cars is crucial to align all stakeholders toward sustainable innovation and future-proof investments. Electrification is the single biggest action our industry can take to cut its carbon footprint. The 2035 target is crucial to align all stakeholders on this journey and ensure European competitiveness. We urge EU policy makers to focus on what actions we need to take to get there, rather than reopening legislation just agreed on. The EU Green Deal has laid a solid foundation to curb emissions, while attracting long-term investment in Europe. With global EV competition intensifying, Europe must stay committed to the vision. Policy makers must avoid reopening legislation that could undermine this progress. Volvo Cars has joined key industrial companies and organisations from across the automotive, clean tech, transport and energy ecosystem, to urge EU policymakers, to uphold the recently adopted car and van CO2 standards and maintain the 2035 target for 100% zero-emission vehicles. There is only one path to a sustainable energy-mobility system: electric and clean, with a few exceptions for non-electric clean. Support only the companies that take it. There is a concerted campaign against electric vehicles, cars in particular, we need to defeat it. For those behind this campaign, please accept that it is the end of ICE, the end of fossil fuels, we are moving on to a much better technology, as we cannot continue to destroy the biosphere. For those who want to solve the climate emergency, but claim that electric cars are not part of the solution, I challenge you to provide a substitute that is available now. I also challenge you to learn about any mobility technology, any technology for that matter, that is considered a solution to the climate emergency, before you make any statements about it.
