Last year, I joined a team of coworkers for an overnight trail relay race. It was to be a fun time of trail running, camping, and good outdoor fun. And it was...until the sky opened up with rain for almost 12 hours straight through the overnight hours. The trails went from dry to damp to wet to muddy and stayed that way. It was awesome! Unfortunately, one of our teammates got injured during his first run segment and had to withdraw. As a team, we came up with a plan to cover the extra running and keep the team moving while still allowing each to sleep a little between outings. As the conditions worsened, each of us leveraged our experience, skill, and equipment to navigate the course, stay safe, and help each other. We faced into the waves of torrential rain, running muddy hills with occasionally shin-deep mud, helping each other stay warm, fed, and motivated. There was no staying dry! In the end, we came together, took care of business, and celebrated the result we earned. If you work in a team environment, you've likely had a situation where a teammate struggled and the team had to absorb the work. A healthy team handles setbacks with grace, making space for mistakes, bad luck, misfortune, and life to happen to team members. Each team member steps up and helps with their experience, skill, and equipment. It's still frustrating to take on extra work, especially when you're already loaded. If you trust your team, you'll be more willing to help cover the gaps because its the right thing to do, knowing that one day you might be the one in need. If you don't trust your team, the story can be very different. If you're on a dysfunctional team, the story can be very different...will likely be very different. I'm grateful to be on a wonderful team at work that inspires me to aim high and drive outstanding outcomes every day.
