🚀 Key Lessons: Public Affairs and Lobbying Workshop 🚀 I recently attended an engaging discussion on Public Affairs and Lobbying led by Renée Roodhuizen, an Atlas Corps Alumni, during the ongoing Atlas Corps Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Hilton Prize Summit in LA, and here are some key takeaways on how to effectively advocate for your cause: 🔑 Public Affairs vs. Lobbying Public affairs is about building relationships with stakeholders, not just governments. Lobbying focuses on directly influencing decision-makers. Both are crucial for creating favorable conditions for your cause. 🔑 Preparation = Success Be ready! When you get that 20-second chance to pitch your cause to a decision-maker, you must deliver a concise, compelling message that aligns with their priorities. 🔑 Understand the Legal Landscape Knowing the laws, legislative cycles, and budget allocations affecting your issue helps you intervene at the right moments, increasing your impact. 🔑 Be Realistic While passion is essential, realistic, actionable goals are more likely to gain support. Temper your requests to fit political and budget constraints. 🔑 Humanitarian Organizations: Don’t Be Naïve Humanitarian organizations often fall into the trap of assuming that just because they are doing good work, everyone will automatically support them. This approach can be naïve in the realm of public affairs. International development is not just about goodwill; it's also a business. Decision-makers have competing priorities, and just "doing good" isn't always enough to sway policies or attract funding. You need to show how your cause fits within political and economic realities, and how it delivers tangible results. Advocacy is about strategy, not just passion. 🔑 Relationships and Consistency Matter Every interaction, no matter how small, can build rapport with key influencers. Track your relationships and be strategic in every engagement. 💡 Key Takeaway: Advocacy is Strategy Success in advocacy requires a deep understanding of the political and social landscape, along with preparation and strategic relationship-building. 🌍 Shaping EU Policies in Brussels: A Guide to Effective Lobbying It was a pleasure to share some insights during this seminar on How to shape EU Policies in Brussels: A Guide to Effective Lobbying, co-hosted by Thomas Pålsson from Aspekta our Swedish partner in Public Relations Global Network This seminar allows me to share tips and advices about effective lobbying strategies designed to build long-term relationships, establish credibility, and contribute meaningfully to policy outcomes... Key Takeaways: ➡Get Involved Early: EU processes are structured to include stakeholders input at all stages. Ident ifying critical issues early gives you a strategic edge and enables more proactive engagement, allowing your input to shape rather than react to legislation. ➡Build Relationships, Not Transactions: Effective lobbying is rooted in building lasting relationships rather than one-off exchanges. Providing reliable, data-backed information and becoming a credible source for policymakers can make your voice a go-to during decision-making. ➡Craft Persuasive Messaging: Articulating your message clearly and persuasively—framing it around shared interests and EU goals—resonates more strongly and positions your organization as a constructive player in the policy landscape. A big thank you to Sara Lindblad for the invitation—this seminar truly underscored the importance of early, active, and strategic engagement in EU policymaking. and of course it is all about being passionated about what you do !

In apparent response to the Liberals’ plan to bypass the provinces, Premier Smith introduced Bill 18, the Provincial Priorities Act, last week. If passed, the law will require municipalities or other provincially funded and regulated entities (e.g., post-secondary institutions) to get a green light from the province before they can accept federal funding. The bill is currently in second reading. For those who are interested, the text of the Provincial Priorities Act can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eigKXeM3 Questions or concerns about how this may affect your organization? On 14th Nov 2024, I attended the Townhall Conference to present views on the draft Public Participation Bill. The undersigned presented on some lessons from the Aarhus Convention which sets out the minimum standards on public participation as follows: i. Timely and effective notification of the proposed decision. ii. Advance documents free of charge. iii. Reasonable timeframes for participation and at early stages of decision making. iv. Due account of the outcome of the public participation and feedback mechanisms to stakeholders on the outcome of the process. v. Inclusion of a variety of stakeholders such as civil society organizations, local experts and Special Interests Groups. The undersigned presented that all modes of public participation should be deployed where a decision is likely to affect every demographic. The following modes of public participation were proposed: a. Citizen task forces. b. Public hearings and consultations as well as town hall consultations. c. Workshops, questionnaires and interviews. This presentation was hailed by the Solicitor General as some of the best practices that Kenya can borrow from the Aarhus Convention and include into the Public Participation Bill.
