Michael Armstrong, Vice President & Chief Forester of the COFI, issued the following statement today regarding the closure of B.C. ports: “With the disruptions to operations at West Coast ports, the BC Council of Forest Industries urges all parties – employers, unions, and both provincial and federal governments – to urgently collaborate on a swift resolution. These ports are an essential channel for British Columbia’s forestry sector, connecting us to key US and Asian markets and playing an indispensable role in global supply chains. 🛑 The European Union has proposed a delay in the implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Here’s what you need to know: →→ The EU is considering a 1-year delay for large companies and 18 months for small companies. However, the delay must still be approved by the EU Parliament before taking effect. →→ The forestry industry in the South, which already operates under sustainable, climate-smart practices, could be unfairly targeted by regulations meant for areas where deforestation is a real issue. The Premier, the old Minister of Forests, and some anti-forestry publics often say that the forest industry does not make enough value-added investments or products. I saw this article in May 23, 1940, Prince George Citizen. The industry has been increasing value in forest products for a long time. They started with producing rough lumber from large trees in the bushmills leaving the wood waste in the woods. After significant investment in harvesting and manufacturing equipment, and training people in safety and operation, with marketing campaigns, there is less waste in the woods, more products made, and the ability to use a broad cross section of trees in the forest. Value-added has happened throughout the industry and continues to grow. The government and the people of our Province should know more about the great things that have been done and that the industry is not relying on its laurels. It continues to search for improvements that ultimately benefit our communities.

Only 6 out 88 of the world’s top timber and pulp companies publicly commit all their suppliers to prohibit planting on peat of any depth 🌱 Peatlands are crucial carbon reservoirs and host unique biodiversity. Draining or degrading these lands releases stored carbon, worsening the climate crisis. It's imperative for companies to halt future plantations on peatlands immediately. While transitioning from current operations, best practices like avoiding drainage and fire use should be followed. Yet just 7.8% of companies publish evidence of implementing best management practices for soils and peat. Post-harvest, replanting should be avoided, focussing instead on restoration and setting up protection measures for peatlands. It was a nice surprise when #Forbes reached out to me to discuss the complexities and potential repercussions of the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR) on global trade. (𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯) During the interview, we delved into the significant concerns raised by small producers in #LatinAmerica. These producers fear being excluded from the EU market due to the steep compliance costs. There is more to this than preventing deforestation - it's also about ensuring smallholders with limited resources are not inadvertently penalized by the regulation, while large corporations exploit the proposed delay to postpone their compliance efforts, effectively undermining the regulation's intended impact and allowing unsustainable practices to persist unchecked. One of the key takeaways from our conversation was the need for a more nuanced approach to compliance, particularly by implementing region-specific risk assessments rather than blanket country-level evaluations.
