It’s only December, and I already have 10 fantastic applicants for our summer camp staff! Recruiting a team of talented, passionate counselors is always a challenge, but seeing this early enthusiasm reminds me of the value of intentional leadership development and community building. One thing I’ve learned as a camp director is how important it is to take the time to truly know our campers. By building relationships and recognizing their potential, I can help identify future leaders who will thrive on staff. Our current team also plays a huge role—they excel at inviting new leaders into the community and making camp a place where everyone feels supported and excited to grow. Here are some strategies that have worked for me in recruiting passionate staff: 1️⃣ Look for leadership potential in your campers. Summer after summer, we see future counselors emerge. When we invest in them early, the transition from camper to counselor feels natural and rewarding. 2️⃣ Highlight the personal and professional benefits. Many young people are looking for more than just a summer job. Show them how camp can offer leadership training, mentorship, and skills they’ll carry for life. 3️⃣ Foster an inclusive and welcoming culture. It’s not just about recruitment; it’s about retention. When your current staff feel valued, they’ll enthusiastically invite others to join in the experience.
