Love this take from Joe Martin. The way I make sense of this is that it's about proportionality. It's not that brand doesn't matter when you're a startup. It's that it's built one-sale-at-a-time instead of one-billboard-at-a-time. Closing deals IS building brand. 💡 IMO the best way to build your brand as a startup is consistently closing and keeping one happy customer at a time... not trying to run a brand marketing playbook from a marketer who worked at P&G. #cmozen #startups #marketing
Priorities as a startup . 1. Profitable revenue 2. Lead Gen. 3. Customer experience 4. Customer retention 5. Reduce churn 6. Efficient marketing 7. Database building 8. Analytics 9. Product 999. Brand These are not ranked in any specific order. The top 9 are all crucial. The thing with brand is it is influenced by the top 9, but as a startup “brand only” campaigns are a waste of time and resources that need to be focused on growth and retention especially when churn is high. #marketing #leadership

Product-market fit is not just a buzzword. .... Take SaaS companies as an example to illustrate some key metrics that can indicate product-market fit: 1. Exponential Organic Growth: This refers to whether the growth pattern of your product resembles a "Hockey Stick." A clear upward trend in growth is a strong signal that your product is resonating with the market. 2. Product Stickiness and Loyal User Base:A magic number in the industry is a 40% loyal user base. This figure comes from observing numerous companies and recognizing that a significant portion of users who are deeply engaged with the product is a strong indicator of fit. It's crucial to compare this number with industry peers. 3. Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC):The ideal ratio is 3:1, meaning for every $3 a customer spends on your platform, you should spend $1 to acquire them. This ratio is calculated using your sales and marketing budget versus the revenue from new customers. While every industry may have its own CAC benchmarks, the SaaS rule of thumb is 3:1. 4. User Retention and Satisfaction: If 40% of your users would be significantly disappointed without your product, it's a good sign that you should continue to develop and refine it. Other metrics, such as the Net Promoter Score (NPS), can help measure word-of-mouth and overall customer sentiment. Understanding and achieving product-market fit is essential for any startup looking to secure VC funding. It demonstrates that your product is not only viable but also highly desirable in the market. By focusing on the metrics that matter—organic growth, user retention, CAC ratio, and customer satisfaction—you set the stage for a strong pitch to potential investors.
