The SA Student Finance Forum will hold its annual conference on Thurs. and Fri. 5 & 6 September 2024. This year’s conference will focus on sound financial corporate governance under challenging circumstances at HEI. This includes, amongst others, uncertainties of the current administration of NSFAS, the economic meltdown that increases the unemployment rate, and the formation of the government of national unity that comes with even further uncertainties in the education fraternity. The issues related to fraud and corruption have infiltrated higher education institutions. How do institutions enforce the culture of ethics and accountability to staff in minimizing the scourge?

Pls can I connect with Scholars of the Eira Francis Davies Scholarship? Either current beneficiaries or past. I need help in clarifying the two points below. 1. It's required of me to submit my bank statement. At what point should I provide a copy of my latest bank statement? How many years statement should I include and what month statement should be included since the month of May would not be over as at the scholarship application deadline? 2. The statement "Within their application, demonstrate strong academic ability, financial plan to study and motivation for their chosen course at Swansea University". I want to find out if this is applicable when I am applying for the scholarship or when I am applying to Swansea University. Because I have searched through the scholarship application page but couldn't find a place to write it. Application deadline is 26th May, pls I need help.

Are HE Institutions facing unprecedented financial challenge? I'm genuinely curious to know. If/when you can't increase your income, you have to cut your cloth to suit. This seems straightforward enough when you say it but much harder to do in practice of course. FE colleges have been doing this for years (well, some didn't and made the news...), faced with below-inflation grant funding, demographic dips and lower fee income. It has meant redesigning processes and team structures and as well as 'working smarter' it very often means finding ways of simply doing less, especially when the process/team is more distant from the student. Nobody is saying this is easy (I'm absolutely saying it isn't easy, or quick), and accepting that of course HE institutions are usually much bigger and cover a broader range than FE colleges do, nonetheless are there opportunities for HE to learn from the experience in FE, and might there now be more of an appetite to do so? An interesting article on the state of the university sector and why bail outs are not a good solution. Got me thinking about the challenges we face and what might come next. https://lnkd.in/eTMhkMq9

Interesting piece in today's Irish Times (buy paper to read full article) - on the subject of University students working part or full time and missing as much as 50% of lectures/ classes. Author references financial pressures and life style expectations of students. Perhaps many students have their own views on merits of much of the lectures/ class time? Perhaps many of them have no choice given costs of living e.g. rent? What does Society want from third level education? So many now completing third level education. But is it now a very different experience? What do universities think of this? Would we be better off with students taking large loans but then having the time to attend more lectures - obviously with an appropriately funded students loan scheme? Or is what we have the best option for society?

It turns out there is a magic money tree after all. The university sector, like the banks and water companies, can rock up at Downing Street and get whatever they ask for. At this point you might as well turn Number 11 into an oligarch's chequing agency. The magic money tree exists for billionaires but not to rebuild Britain's crumbling schools, courts, roads and railways. Universities should bail themselves out, and all higher education should be free. #tuitionfees #highereducation https://lnkd.in/erHzpCzY
