The Park Fire in Butte County, Northern California, became the state's largest wildfire of the season after a man allegedly pushed a burning car into a gully, causing the fire to spread rapidly. The 48-year-old suspect was arrested and jailed without bail after blending in with park visitors while leaving the area. By Thursday, the fire had burned 45,550 acres near Chico in Bidwell Park, leading to evacuation orders for at least 3,800 people in Butte and Tehama counties and destroying an undetermined number of structures. Over 1,100 firefighters are battling the blaze with only 3% containment, facing high temperatures (100-110 degrees), rugged terrain, and dry vegetation. The Park Fire, spreading at a rate of 4,000 acres per hour initially, surpassed the Lake Fire in Southern California, which burned 38,664 acres and was 90% contained. This year, California has experienced a significant increase in wildfires, with 15 times more acres burned and nearly 800 more fires compared to the same period in 2023, including 54 arson-related incidents. The Park Fire is one of 64 new fires in California on Wednesday, highlighting the state's ongoing struggle with wildfire outbreaks. #californiadaily #fire #burning #evacuation #globalwarming #wildlife #HumanNature

In a 2021 survey of Montana residents, 93% of respondents felt completely confident in their ability to practice proper fire safety. According to the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, on average, 75% of wildfires in Montana are started by humans. With fire season in full swing, here are a few reminders to help prevent human-caused wildfires: - Obey all fire restrictions! Check https://lnkd.in/dzi4X8A7 for restriction details across Montana. - If campfires are allowed, NEVER leave them unattended and fully extinguish before leaving. If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave. Remember, drown, stir, drown, feel! - Ensure your trailer chains aren't dragging to prevent sparks. - Check if outdoor burning is allowed in your area. Many counties have closed it due to fire danger. - Report wildfires immediately by calling 9-1-1. #firesafety #wildfire #montana

🗞️ The Park Wildfire in Northern #California which started toward the end of June 2024 was the largest in terms of area burned this year in California and the Western U.S. (California, Oregon, Washington State). At around 430,000 acres burned, the Park Fire also ranks in the top four all-time largest recorded California wildfires in terms of area. #Oregon has set a new record for the size of area burned by wildfire in a year, with some 1.9 million acres burned in 2024, and six wildfires burning over 100,000 acres. Wildfires in Oregon have burned more acres of land this year than any since reliable records began, authorities said, with the region's peak fire season in mid-August still on the horizon. Blazes have scorched more than 1.4 million acres, or nearly 2,200 square miles (5,700 square kilometers), said Northwest Interagency Coordination Center spokesperson Carol Connolly. That's the most since reliable records began in 1992, she said, and surpasses the previous record set in 2020, when deadly fires tore across the state. Connolly said 71 large fires have burned the vast majority of Oregon land so far this year. Large fires are defined as those that burn more than 100 acres of timber or more than 300 acres of grass or brush. Thirty-two homes in the state have been lost to the fires, she said. The blazes have been fueled by high temperatures, dry conditions and low humidity. #climatechange #wildfires #oregon #us #globalwarming #environment #climateaction #netzero #humanity #biodiversityloss https://lnkd.in/gzXbAnhf

Think I have shared this every year around this time. As the summer begins to heat up unfortunately seems as though the wildfire activity heats up as well (pardon the pun;) Useful to track where a wildfire is in comparison to your home or your insured's home. #californiawildfire #wildfire #californiahomeownersinsurance

Wildfires Threaten Nearly One Third of U.S Residents and Buildings Photo Credit: A highway warning sign displays a message while the sun is shrouded in thick wildfire smoke behind it on August 15, 2021 near Lakeview, Oregon. Mathieu Lewis-Rolland/Getty Images A new approach to calculating wildfire risk shows that more people and places in the U.S. are in harm’s way than previously thought USDA Forest Service, working with Montana researchers, took a new approach to measuring #wildfirerisk and limited its historical analysis to the 15 years between 2004 and 2018. A previous analysis considered conditions over 34 years ending in 2012. Nearly 75 percent of #tribal area residents are in counties with high wildfire risk. And nearly 20 percent of high-risk counties have a large share of mobile homes, the analysis found. The new version includes updated data about where homes and buildings are located and what types of trees, shrubs and grasses are present on various #landscapes . The changes help capture the risk of “low-probability, high-impact events like those that we’ve recently seen in parts of the country, like the Pacific Northwest,” Pohl of Headwaters said. “And we’re better able to represent the way embers can spread #wildfires into communities.” Link to the full article below:
