The Government of Alberta announced it is committing $8.6 billion through the new School Construction Accelerator Program to create more than 200,000 new and modernized spaces for students. Starting in Budget 2025, the province will kick-start up to 30 new schools and as many as eight modernizations and replacement schools every year for the next three years. The School Construction Accelerator program also takes immediate action to speed up the construction of schools by enabling school projects to be approved in-year for their next stage in the #construction process without having to wait for the next budget cycle. This means all previously approved school projects currently in the planning and design stages can move forward to the next stage as soon as they are ready to do so. Through this change, 10 previously announced priority school projects are now approved for the next stage of project delivery, including six moving to full construction. The School Outreach Company is embarking on a collaboration to inspire secondary school students about the UK construction industry. 🏗️ They are aiming to raise £100,000 and establish five regional steering groups led by construction experts. Each regional team will craft a tailored strategy to showcase the industry and debunk some common misconceptions among young minds. A spokesperson from The School Outreach Company said "For just £40, we can engage with a school throughout the academic year. With our collective target of £100,000, the construction industry can connect with over 2,000 secondary schools and colleges—about half of the total in the UK." There’s a real concern for the lack of interest in construction skills within the younger generations, with a shortage of newly qualified tradesmen already appearing in the current job market. Luckily, there are schemes working on trying to entice the builders of tomorrow into the industry, such as this campaign by Historic Environment Scotland that puts an emphasis on traditional building methods. There is a pressing need for a reevaluation of educational institutions and infrastructure across the country. The visually striking but outdated models of huge libraries, zoos, and science centers are no longer sustainable. Institutions in operation today must adopt more inclusive fundraising strategies to become self-sustainable. Last fall, a fundraising campaign was proposed to the Ontario Science Centre, focusing on this April's eclipse to generate funds for necessary repairs. Unfortunately, and sadly, there was no response or interest from the institution. Some boards have become overly reliant on government funding, losing their entrepreneurial drive. To ensure broader access to knowledge, the government should prioritize widespread innovation over singular projects that have limited outreach. It is crucial for board leaders to explore new and innovative financing approaches, leveraging community resources to reduce reliance on taxpayer dollars. Collaborative efforts and fresh funding strategies are essential to drive sustainable growth and development in educational infrastructure nationwide, within our budgets.

Watkin Jones Group secures planning approval for 484 PBSA scheme in Bristol Watkin Jones is pleased to announce that Bristol City Council Development Committee (‘the Council’) approved plans for the development of a 484-bed purpose-built student accommodation (‘PBSA’) scheme on Malago Road, Bedminster in Bristol earlier this week. This development represents one of the final projects of the Bedminster Green regeneration area and follows two years of negotiation and engagement with the Council. Formerly an engineering works and foundry, the project is a prime opportunity to revive a disused brownfield site and contribute to the broader regeneration of the Bedminster Green area. The scheme will deliver high-quality managed homes for students ranging from six to ten storeys in height across three buildings. The proposals will deliver broad benefits to the local community, including the creation of a new public space and improvements to the highway infrastructure. The new student population is expected to support local businesses, including those along nearby East Street in particular. Compared to the proposals of previous developers, Watkin Jones’ proposal promoted significant changes including reducing the number and height of buildings across the site and decreasing the number of rooms to better reflect the local character and in response to public engagement. https://lnkd.in/e_7hNcCQ

Houston's growth is fueling an education construction boom, with recent K-12 bond measures amounting to $5.7 billion for new school buildings, updated technologies, and athletic facilities. 🏘 Today, the PLG on Housing Market & Housing Delivery hosted a panel of elected colleagues and industry leaders for a discussion at UK Construction Week, focussing on the need to consider a balance between brownfield and greenbelt development with regards to UK housing delivery. The discussion explored: - The need to reevaluate the Government's brownfield first focus in order to adequately address the housing supply gap - Properly equipping the planning system with the skills and funding required to effectively manage current capacity - A wider acceptance is needed of the reality of the greenbelt, much of it is not actually green - Reintroduction of local housing targets and a nationwide focus on making sure that up-to-date local plans are in place 🗣 Thank you to our panellists, participants and colleagues at UK Construction Week who helped organise the event.
