🌩️ Exciting News from CSTB in Nantes, France! 🌩️ Today marks the completion of our experimental campaign for the project CLIMATHUNDERR - CLIMAtic investigation of THUNDERstorm winds, in the context of the EU funded ERIES: Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies. Experiments were conducted at the Jules Verne climatic wind tunnel - thermal unit SC2 of the CSTB. 👨🏫 The project team comprises the following researchers within the Giovanni Solari Wind Engineering (GS-WinDyn) Research Group: Federico Canepa, Josip Žužul, Andi Xhelaj (Università degli Studi di Genova), Djordje Romanic, PhD (McGill University), Alessio Ricci (Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori, Pavia) and Horia Hangan (Ontario Tech University). They have been greatly supported by Massimiliano Burlando (Università degli Studi di Genova) and the CSTB on-site team (Anthony Guibert, FLAMAND Olivier, Philippe Delpech, jean-paul bouchet). 🔍 The CLIMATHUNDERR project aims to explore the thermal effects on the geometric and dynamic characteristics of downburst outflows. This is achieved through buoyancy-driven impinging jets at large geometric scales! 📸 In the picture below, our research group is posing next to the meticulously crafted orography model of the Polcevera valley in Genoa, Italy, created by FORMES ET VOLUMES. 🎥 Alongside it, you can see a stunning flow visualization of the cold downburst impacting the model. Stay tuned for more updates as we delve deeper into this fascinating study. #CLIMATHUNDERR #ERIESproject #research #CSTB #thunderstorm #wind #downburst #climate #PolceveraValley #Genoa

Meet our colleagues at Transport Research Arena (TRA) 2024 in Dublin! Get to know more about NAUTILUS: The innovative technological solution proposed and developed in the NAUTILUS project is based on the combination of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (#SOFCs) and a #battery storage system consisting of a conventional lithium-ion battery pack. This integrated system, referred as the Genset, is designed and tested to fulfil entirely the ship’s energy requirements during operation, manoeuvring, and accommodating hotel loads that represents approximately 15-20 percent of the cruise ship energy demand. Neither the SOFC nor the battery storage system can solely fulfil the total power demand of a cruise ship, which is the reason of coupling both in the propulsion system. The total power demand of a cruise ship will be split between the available power sources. The distribution of electrical power to the Genset requires intelligent control and management. The Energy Management Unit that can be embedded into the ship's grid is also developed by the NAUTILUS project consortium. The NAUTILUS project develops process design and a digital demonstrator of the on-board energy system, a physical Proof of Concept (PoC: 30 kWe SOFC + battery) and a modularized functional demonstrator (60 kWe SOFC + battery). The digital design as well as the physical demonstrator are evaluated against the marine safety regulations. Emissions from the genset demonstrator will be characterised in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the overall ambition to meet the emissions targets of 2030 of the IMO directive.

I'm excited to share my latest opinion article, where I delve into the pivotal role of material science in advancing sustainable construction practices, specifically phase change materials (PCM) for heated floors. This advanced material not only helps regulate indoor temperatures but potentially reduce energy consumption and associated costs, aligning perfectly with SNUG EU's mission to minimize the environmental impact of buildings. At HiØ Green Research Hub, we're conducting pilot-scale tests for refining this technology. More to come. Special thanks to SNUG EU and Beatriz Giestas for support and opportunity.
Check out our latest opinion article by Farhan Khalique Awan, Doctoral Research Fellow at 🇳🇴Østfold University College (HiØ), where he explores how #MaterialScience is driving a shift towards greener construction practices. 📰 In this piece, Farhan highlights one of SNUG’s innovative solutions - PCM-enhanced self-leveling mortar for heated floors - and delves into the work being developed at HIØ, including pilot scale tests underway at the newly inaugurated HiØ Green Research Hub. 🌱 These advanced materials help regulate indoor temperatures, reduce energy use, and cut costs - all while minimising the environmental impact of buildings, which is at the core of SNUG’s mission.
