Lesson #2 from my Jamaican vacation. Things don't always go as planned and that is never more evident than when you're traveling. Flight delays (we had them). Less than perfect weather (we saw a little). Customs and TSA lines (we were in them). But, one of my favorite memories of the trip comes from a mishap. We were enjoying a fantastic dinner at a restaurant that was open to the elements. We were enjoying the night and the great food when the wind came up and the rain started. It was sheets and sheets of rain and suddenly everything was getting soaked. The staff jumped into action. They pushed other tables together that weren't in the elements and reseated us quickly. Then the lights started flickering and soon went out! There were at least 30 people eating dinner and a number of staff in the pitch black in the middle of what felt like a monsoon! One of the waiters came out of the kitchen and said, "You all have cell phones, mon! Get those lights on!" And one by one the entire place was bathed in cell phone lights. They kept serving drinks and desserts and the lights soon came back on. But, it was one of my favorite memories from the trip. I will never forget dining by cell phone light, on a beach, in a Jamaican restaurant during a rainstorm. No one got mad, no one threw a fit, we all just got through and had an amazing time and a great story to tell! I want to bring that spirit back to my work life. Don't panic. Stay positive. Look for the simple solution to get the task accomplished! The experience is what you make of it, not what the circumstances deliver. So, that's my goal this week! The world needs: More appreciation for those who serve behind the scenes. Understanding that the holidays aren’t always a time of joy for everyone. A reminder to be kind, patient, and thankful. So this Christmas, take a moment to recognize the unsung heroes who help you reunite with family.
