On a special trip to see Carlos Alcaraz prevail on the red clay, I watched Ford vs Ferrari and the iconic red folder scene. In the movie, the red folder details the racing program's status and must pass through various management levels before reaching Henry Ford II. Matt Damon’s character advises Ford to cut the layers and engage directly, removing the proverbial red tape. Reflecting on this, I felt confident that IntouchCX doesn't have these layers; we've scaled with our soul, right? Then, in typical fashion, I started worrying. My inner voice reminded me of conversations with the team saying, "we have too many layers," or clients saying, "we don't understand your layers." Meanwhile, I'm often told I shouldn't HAVE to do things like calling customers or analyzing program performance—rely on the layers, they say. So, what's the extreme of no layers? We have 30K employees in over 30 locations. Can they all report to one person? That seems impractical. The challenge is to have structure without feeling layered. As "layers, layers, layeeeeeers" echoed in my head, my thought was that you need structure and levels, but avoid "layers" as best you can. To do this, I believe you need leaders that care about and immerse themselves in what they do. They need to love the grind of being in the business, getting closer to the action as they grow, and focusing on what should be done, not what shouldn’t. IntouchCX is surrounded by such people. We make mistakes and are far from perfect, but we have a culture of action over reaction and a love for the grind. After Carlos beat Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals, he was asked about the difficult moments of the match. He said he loved the torture; and that you have to love those moments to win. This from a 21 year old. To scale with your soul, I think you must love the trenches, the grind and embrace the constant evolution of the industry.

If you're not familiar with Lee Iacocca, I highly recommend reading his autobiography, Iacocca: An Autobiography. I read it before starting my career, and I remember being truly inspired by his journey and leadership style. This time, as I revisited the book, I found myself appreciating his story with fresh insight, fully realizing how challenging it must have been for him to achieve all that he did. The candid manner in which he narrates his experiences—first as a high-achieving executive at Ford and later as the CEO of Chrysler—makes the book relatable and engaging. Here are a few quick takeaways from the book: ▶️ THINK BIG, THINK DIFFERENTLY: Iacocca exemplified the importance of innovation based on research and consumer insight. Two iconic car models—the Ford Mustang and the Chrysler Minivan—were Iacocca’s brainchildren. ▶️ RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY: Bouncing back after being unexpectedly fired from his high-flying role at Ford, Iacocca revived Chrysler from near bankruptcy. His determination to turn challenges into opportunities shows that his success was no fluke. ▶️ SELL, SELL, SELL: A key thread in his story is his persuasive ability. Whether dealing with labor unions, senators, presidents, customers, or employees, Iacocca knew how to win people over and get things done for everyone’s benefit. ▶️ CELEBRITY: I’m usually cautious about individuals becoming larger than the brand, but Iacocca was one of the rare exceptions. He put his face on Chrysler’s brand and spoke directly to customers. In many ways, he paved the way for future celebrity CEOs like Jack Welch and Steve Jobs. Finally, Iacocca’s down-to-earth style and his ability to connect with people is what truly set him apart as a leader. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come! Charles Richard Patterson, born into slavery in 1833, forged his way into freedom and entrepreneurship, becoming the founder of the first African American-owned automobile company in the United States. He turned his experience as a blacksmith into a thriving business, producing horse-drawn carriages before transitioning to the automotive world under C.R. Patterson & Sons. The Patterson-Greenfield car, released in 1915, stood as a testament to the craftsmanship and forward-thinking vision of the Patterson family. It was more than just a car—it was proof that innovation knows no boundaries of race or background. But the challenges of competing with industrial giants like Ford made sustaining production a battle the company could not ultimately win. Though no Patterson-Greenfield cars are known to have survived to today, C.R. Patterson's legacy endures. He blazed a trail for Black innovation in the automotive industry—a trail that Pontiac Motor Company now seeks to expand upon as we revive a beloved brand and bring it into the future.
