WHAT IF THE OPPOSITE OF OUR STORY ABOUT HEALTH WAS TRUE?
"We are coming to understand health not as the absence of disease, but rather as the process by which individuals maintain their sense of coherence (i.e. sense that life is comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful), and ability to function in the face of change in themselves and their relationships with their environment"
Aaron Antonovsky, Salutogenic Model of Health (1923-1994)
During the first twenty-five years of my career, I believed my role as a GP was all about arranging tests and treatments to eliminate pain and illness.
Logic therefore dictated that the burden of responsibility for the health and wellbeing of my patients, sat squarely with me.
Working in areas of high health need, often involved shoehorning "round" patients into "square" services, particularly those with the most complexity, least activation and "medically unexplained" symptoms,
I realised the way I was practising, whilst effective at "fixing" infections and injuries, became impotent verging on harmful in the face of a tsunami of #longtermconditions caused by our "modern collective lifestyle".
Falling out of love with my job left me wanting to leave the NHS, a service that seemed to offer very little in the way of health creation, for me or my patients.
A "health" service that consumes over 11% of our Gross Domestic Product, supporting incredible advances in drug development and AI, yet all key performance metrics are heading in the wrong direction.
A "health" service that contributes 5% of the UK's carbon emissions and pollutes our water table, thanks to our choice as health professionals to issue almost 1.5 billion prescription items last year, across the UK.
And a "health" service in which five percent of all GPs are accessing support for their mental health through NHS Practitioner Services.
Surely there's got to be a better way?
I'm grateful that my own personal nadir acted as a springboard for personal transformation, and retraining in #coaching, #lifestylemedicine and #mindbodymedicine, boosting my own health and happiness in the process.
The shift from feeling hopeless about the biomedical model, to hopeful about #wholepersoncare, and a newfound confidence in supporting patients to reclaim their personal power as part of their recovery, inspired me to found Wild-Ness.
I am grateful to Gorkem Mert Hamali and the Royal College of General Practitioners for allowing me to share my personal story as part of their portrait series, and for making this freely accessible via the link below.
