Yesterday at the council meeting, I successfully moved a resolution, supported by Cr Sunckell that was passed by all to prepare a joint letter with Christchurch City Council and Selwyn District Council to the Minister of Forestry.
The letter will seek to address the National Environmental Standards for Forestry Management and the fire risk from planted forestry, as highlighted by the recent Port Hills Fires.
My aim is to initiate changes to the current permissive national rules around replanting existing forestry after an event happens, especially in high fire-risk areas. We need stronger ability to prevent highly flammable plantations from endangering our communities, especially as risk increases.
Addressing this at the national level is the only way we can get the changes we need and is key to enabling us to develop more effective local policies that can address some of these increasing risks. This is a good first step to initiating some action to resolve an emerging problem.
