In the first three months of 2024, certificate III qualifications were the most popular level of education with 376 290 (or 50.0%) enrolments. Government expenditure on skills training continues to fall short, delivering sub-par outcomes for both students and taxpayers. This is because governments remain locked into an outdated politically charged narrative, repeatedly referencing TAFE as the cornerstone of skills training. However, the data tells a different story. According to the NCVER data, private Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) consistently outperform TAFE in key areas. For government-funded students, private RTOs achieve higher qualification completion rates, ensuring better outcomes for learners. Additionally, private RTOs lead on most metrics of employer and student satisfaction, demonstrating their ability to deliver skills that meet workforce demands. It's time for policy to prioritise results over rhetoric, recognising the superior performance of independent RTOs in providing high-quality, outcomes-focused training. Taxpayers and students deserve a system that delivers value and supports informed choice, not one limited by outdated preferences for TAFE. The key is to recognise the complementary of independent quality RTOs and public TAFE colleges.
